INDIANAPOLIS- The Parkside Rangers claimed the team championship at the 46
th Annual Midwest Classic, securing the title for a second consecutive season. Parkside totaled a program record 150 points on the way to its sixth Midwest Classic championship overall, finishing the tournament with eight total placers. Individually,
Jalen Spuhler captured the 149-pound title for the second straight year, while
Shane Corrigan and
Easton Worachek each earned runner-up finishes in their respective weight classes.
The level of competition at the Midwest Classic was among the strongest in the nation, with 47 teams competing in the two-day tournament. Of those programs, 15 were ranked in the current top 25, including four ranked inside the top five.
How it Happened:
Shane Corrigan (125lbs): No.2 ranked Corrigan opened the day winning his quarterfinal match by tech fall (16-1) over Braydon Mitchell of Emmanuel, followed by a win in the semifinals over third ranked Anthony Aniciete of Tiffin in a (12-3) major decision. Corrigan finished the meet in second place after losing to first ranked Trevon Gray of Pitt-Johnstown in a (7-2) decision.
Elon Rodriguez (133lbs): Rodriguez advanced through his first match of the day after a forfeit by his opponent. In his second bout, he won by tech fall (22-7) over Zachary Parker of Glenville State. Rodriquez lost to Aidan Sprague of Indianapolis in a (14-13) in his next bout, before claiming the seventh-place title with a (12-6) decision victory over Devin Gomez of Western Colorado.
Emmett Nelson (141lbs): Nelson advanced to the semifinal match after defeating eighth ranked Jake Niffenegger in a (5-4) decision. In his semifinal bout, Nelson lost to, fifth ranked Colton Stoneking of Fairmont State in a (2-0) decision, then again to George Maholtz of Lander by fall. Nelson placed fifth overall in the tournament after defeating 14
th ranked Chad Ozias of Pitt Johnstown in a (4-2) decision.
Jalen Spuhler (149lbs): No. 3 Spuhler won his opening bout of the day in a (4-2) decision over tenth ranked Rudy Lopez of Northern State, a late takedown in period three secured the victory. In the semifinals, he defeated eighth ranked Matthew Sarbo of Pitt Johnstown in a (5-4) decision. Spuhler secured the 149lb title after defeating sixth ranked Hayden Kuhn of Ashland by fall at 2:27. With the win, Jalen is the 149lb Midwest Classic Champion for the second consecutive year.
Easton Worachek (157lbs): Worachek edged out seventh ranked Kaden Renner of UMary in a (6-5) decision, a late period three takedown led him to victory. He defeated eighth ranked Casey Barnett of Tiffin in a (6-5) decision to secure his spot in the finals. In the finals, Worachek was edged out but fourth ranked Aaden Valdez of Adams State in a (5-2) decision.
Brody Hemauer (165lbs): No. 4 Hemauer advanced to the semifinal bout after winning by a (4-1) decision in overtime, over Bryce Dauphin of Central Oklahoma. In the semifinals, he lost in a (6-4) decision to second ranked Nolan Gessler of Tiffin, before winning his next bout in a (5-4) decision over Sam Richardson of McKendree. With a medical forfeit in his final bout, Hemauer finished the weekend with a sixth place finish.
Dajun Johnson (174lbs): No. 11 Johnson dropped his first bout of the day in a (5-1) decision in overtime to tenth ranked Sevriano Garza of Ashland. He then bounced back winning his next two bouts by major decision both (15-5) and (13-4) respectively. In the consolation semifinal bout, Johnson defeated Hunter Jump of Central Oklahoma in a (4-2) dec. In the third place matchup, Johnson lost to 12
th ranked Clint Morrisette of King in a (4-2) decision, resulting in a fourth-place finish.
Brady Schuh (184lbs): No. 7 ranked Schuh dropped his first bout of the day to sixth ranked Darion Johnson of McKendree in a (10-3) decision. He won his next two matches by decision (15-8) and a (4-1) over ninth ranked David Davis of Tiffin. In the consolation semifinals, Schuh lost to fifth ranked Patrick Jackson of Gannon in overtime. He finished the day in sixth after 15
th ranked Brady Westall of Northern State won in a (6-4) decision.
Jordan Blanchard (197lbs): No. 13 Blanchard won his first bout of the day by fall at 2:33 over Sage Harrison of Western Colorado. In his second, he lost to Joey Lyons of Gannon in a (4-2) decision.
The Rangers will return to dual competition on December 20, hosting Minnesota State Moorhead at De Simone Arena with action set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
