(Feb. 20, 2016)-- The 14th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball squad had its 32-game Great Lakes Valley Conference home winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon as East Division rival University of Indianapolis came away with the 85-74 victory inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
UIndy's Jordan Loyd proved to be the difference-maker, scoring a game-high 36 points with 29 coming in the second half in a wild see-saw affair with 15 lead changes and six ties.
It was a tight ballgame for the opening 28 minutes before the visiting Greyhounds (19-6, 13-4 GLVC) scored eight straight points to stake the first double-digit lead of the afternoon at 67-56 with 10:13 remaining. The spurt was part of a larger 18-5 run, turning a two-point Ranger lead into an 11-point hole. UIndy owned a lead of at least seven the rest of the way, sending UW-Parkside (21-4, 14-3 GLVC) its first home GLVC setback since falling 77-74 to Lewis University on Jan. 21, 2013.
The Greyhounds raced out to a 26-18 lead with 7:29 left in the opening half only to see the Rangers score the next seven, including a three from
Alexander Brown to pull within a single point with 6:13 left before halftime. Indianapolis pushed its lead back to six and owned a five-point buffer with 3:42 remaining before the Green and White tallied the final eight points of the half, seizing a 38-35 lead at the break. Brown provided a jumper with 44 ticks left to regain the lead while
Andy Mazurczak hit a layup with 15 ticks left for the three-point cushion.
The opening five minutes of the second half saw eight lead changes with UW-Parkside taking what proved to be its final lead of the night off a
Jake Verhagen three with 14:45 remaining. UIndy answered the call with an 18-5 spurt to build a double-digit lead.
Brown came off the bench and led the Rangers, scoring 17 points while
Kendale McCullum added 14 points with a team-best nine assists and six rebounds.
Kyle Flanagan was the third Ranger in double figures, posting 12 points.
Loyd powered the Hounds shooting 15-for-18 from the field to notch 36 points while Tyler Rambo and Lucas Barker each added a dozen.
UW-Parkside shot 59.3 percent (16-for-27) from the floor in the opening half before the hot hand switched to UIndy as the Hounds scorched the nets in the final 20 minutes, hitting 63.3 percent (19-for-30) of its opportunities. The Rangers held a 30-14 edge in bench scoring but was outrebounded by a 30-23 margin.
Saturday was Senior Day as
Andy Mazurczak and
Jalen Currie were honored in a pregame ceremony. Mazurczak is the winningest player in program history with 90 wins in the Green and White while Currie has suited up with UW-Parkside during the winningest two-year stretch in program history.
Parkside caps off the regular season on Thursday, facing Lewis University at 7:30 p.m. in Romeoville, Illinois.
