Rangers Slip Past Peacocks, 74-71

SOMERS, Wis. (Dec. 15, 2015)-- Andy Mazurczak poured on 23 points, including 10 from the free throw line as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball squad fended off host Upper Iowa University 74-71 on Tuesday night in a wild affair featuring 13 lead changes and nine ties.
 
The host Peacocks (6-8) ripped off six straight points to stake a 62-58 edge with 4:37 remaining in the contest. The Rangers (6-2) countered with a Jalen Currie three and a pair of free throws from Mazurczak to reestablish a one-point lead with 3:25 left. The lead changed hands four times over the next two minutes before a pair of free throws from Kendale McCullum gave the Rangers the 68-67 edge. UW-Parkside led the rest of the way with Mazurczak canning all six of his free throw attempts down the stretch to preserve the non-conference win.
 
The homestanding Peacocks raced out to a 9-4 advantage after four minutes of play but the Rangers battled back, receiving back to back jumpers from Kendale McCullum and Kyle Flanagan to knife the deficit to just one with 14:17 left in the opening half. The Rangers seized its first lead of the night at 12-11 off a Goran Zagorac layup and further asserted its dominance with a 9-0 run to claim a 23-13 advantage with 6:55 left. Upper Iowa clawed back into the game, closing within three with 3:49 and again with 45 seconds left but Alexander Brown canned a three with 27 ticks left as UW-Parkside enjoyed a 37-31 lead at the halftime intermission.

Mazurczak led all scorers with 23 points, sinking all 10 of his free throw attempts while securing five rebounds. Alexander Brown added 14 points off the bench with Kendal McCullum chipping in 13along with four steals.
 
Jernell Hughes paced the Peacocks with 20 points while Carson Parker and Dennis Austin III added 16 and 12 points, respectively.
 
UW-Parkside had an uncharacteristic 14 turnovers but was able to force UIU to 17 of its own. The Rangers made 27 trips to the charity stripe, hitting 22 of their attempts (81.5 percent).

The Rangers return to the hardwood on Saturday, capping off its four game road swing in the Upper Peninsula against Michigan Tech University.
