WHITEWATER, Wis. — On Saturday afternoon, the Parkside wrestling team delivered a commanding performance, defeating the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 30-9 to win the Battle of the Sake Bottle. The Rangers won seven of the ten bouts in the dual, securing a decisive victory over their in-state rival.
The dual started at 174lbs, where seventh ranked
Dajun Johnson gave Parkside a 3-0 after defeating 12th-ranked Jermaine Butler in a 4-3 decision.
Thirteenth ranked Gavin Kohel of Whitewater responded with a hard-fought 13-10 decision over
Brady Schuh, giving the Warhawks 3 points of their own.
Jordan Blanchard recorded the fastest bout of the day, earning a first-period fall over Tyler Haydon in just 2 minutes and 53 seconds. His win secured six team points for Parkside, extending the Rangers' lead to 9-3.
At 285lbs,
Cooper Caraway took care of business, winning by a 16-1 tech fall. Caraway had 4 takedowns throughout the bout, securing 5 team points for the Rangers.
Number two ranked-
Shane Corrigan continued the fast start for Parkside when he secured 5 first period points, including a takedown and two near fall points. In the second period, Corrigan earned an escape point, penalty point and had a takedown. He finished out the third period with two takedown, securing a 16-1 tech fall win over Brady Phelps.
Elon Rodriguez started the second half of the dual strong for Parkside at 133lbs. He picked up a 7-2 decision win, with two takedowns and an escape, furthering the lead 22-3.
Tenth ranked Justin Fortugno defeated
Troy Dolphin in the 141lb bout, with a 7-2 decision. Fortugno's efforts gave 3 points to Whitewater, making the score 22-6 in favor of the Rangers.
In the 149lb bout, fourth ranked
Jalen Spuhler had the third tech fall of the day for the Rangers, defeating fifth ranked Dominik Mallinder 16-1. Spuhler had two takedowns in the first period, followed by an escape point and another takedown in the second. He earned two penalty points, had his fourth takedown of the day and received a riding time point in the third period, adding onto the Rangers overall score, making it 27-6.
Easton Worachek edged out Luke Swan in the 157lb bout, with a 4-3 decision. Worachek had a takedown early in the first period, followed by an escape point in the second period adding onto the Rangers score, making it 30-6.
Third ranked Brayden Peet defeated fourth ranked
Brody Hemauer in the final bout of the day at 165lb by a 3-1 decision, giving Whitewater 3 team points.
With the 30-9 victory, Parkside improves its dual record to 2-0 and turns its attention to the Findlay Open. The Rangers will return to action on November 15 when they travel to Findlay, Ohio, to compete in the tournament starting at 9:00 a.m.
