Parkside Wrestling Posts Strong Performance at Pointer Open

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Wisconsin–Parkside wrestling team turned in a strong performance at the 2025 Pointer Open, hosted by the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. The Rangers had nine wrestlers finish in the top five across several weight classes, highlighted by individual titles from Jordan Blanchard and unattached heavyweight competitor Tanner Gormanson

At 125 pounds, Dylan Duvernay battled his way to a runner-up finish after advancing to the championship match. Duvernay opened the tournament with back-to-back technical fall victories, then followed with a 4-2 decision in the quarterfinals and a 10-3 decision in the semifinals before ultimately falling to Christian Guzman of North Central in the finals by technical fall, 16-1.

At 133 pounds, Matthew Chi, who entered the tournament ranked No. 14 nationally, also claimed a second-place finish for the Rangers. Chi opened the day with a first-round fall, followed by an 11-1 major decision victory in the second round. He continued his strong performance with back-to-back decision wins in both the quarterfinals and semifinals to advance to the championship round before dropping a hard-fought 4-0 decision to Ethan Spacht of North Central.

In the 141-pound bracket, Jordan Craft earned a fifth-place finish after defeating Hudson Hackbarth of Maryville by fall in 4:39. Craft opened the day with a win in the opening round, followed by a dominant 18-3 technical fall victory and a major decision in his next two matches. He then dropped a major decision in the quarterfinals and another major decision later in the bracket before closing out the tournament strong with his fall over Hackbarth to secure his podium position.

At 157 pounds, Cody Welker continued Parkside's strong showing with a third-place finish. Welker opened the tournament with a dominant 17-2 technical fall victory in his first match before dropping a close decision in the following round. He rebounded with a decision win and followed that up with another victory to advance to the third-place bout, where he closed his day in commanding fashion with another 17-2 technical fall over Peter Hollingshead of Luther College.

At 184 pounds, Sam Schwabe  finished second after advancing to the finals with a series of dominant wins. Schwabe opened the day with a commanding 17-0 technical fall victory, then followed with major decision wins in both the quarterfinals and semifinals to secure his spot in the championship match. He fell in the finals to Easton Hull of UW–Stevens Point by fall at 5:53.

At 197 pounds, Jordan Blanchard claimed the top spot for Parkside, capturing the title after defeating Ben Strehlow of Luther College by an 8-1 decision in the finals. Blanchard opened the tournament with a fall in the first round at 2:12, advanced through the quarterfinals, won the semifinals by decision, and then secured the championship with an 8-1 decision victory in the finals.

Competing unattached, Nolan Skebba finished fifth at 165 pounds after a 10-3 decision victory over Harrison Konder of North Central. Skebba opened the tournament with a fall at 2:30 in the first round, followed by a major decision in the second round and an 8-4 decision in the next round. He then dropped his next two matches by decision before closing out the day with his fifth-place 10-3 decision win.

At 174 pounds, Sullivan Ramos, also competing unattached, placed third for the Rangers. Ramos opened the day with a 12-2 major decision in the first round, then dropped a match in the second round. He rebounded with an 11-4 decision win, followed by a fall at 2:50, and another decision victory to advance to the third-place match. Ramos capped the tournament with a pin over Mitchell Betz of Manchester in just 2:34 to secure third place.

At 285 pounds, Tanner Gormanson, competing unattached, closed out the day with a championship performance. Gormanson opened the tournament with a decision win in the first round, followed by a fall at 4:16 in the quarterfinals. He advanced through the semifinals with a 7-6 decision and then captured the championship with a 10-3 decision victory over Elijah Osit of Aurora University in the finals.

The Rangers will return to action on November 8th at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
