MANKATO, Minn. — The second ranked Parkside wrestling team hit the road for a key NSIC road trip on Thursday night, taking on the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks. The Rangers showed up in a big way, defeating the Mavericks by a 32-4 final score, winning nine of the ten bouts.
Twelfth ranked
Shane Corrigan started the night defeating Jacob Fitzpatrick by a 15-5 major decision. Corrigan recorded a takedown in the first to take the lead. He put his foot on the gas in the second period, scoring seven points on an escape and two takedowns. Corrigan continued to dominate with in the third, securing the 15-5 major decision.
Fifth ranked
Matthew Chi won a tight battle with Chase Beckett by a 7-4 decision. Beckett led 3-1 after the first period. Chi tied the bout in the second at three with a reversal. Beckett reclaimed the lead with an escape to open the third, but Chi was able to score the winning takedown, securing the victory.
Top ranked
Cayden Henschel kept the momentum going with a 10-1 major decision victory over Colton Hush. Henschel lead 5-1 after the first period thanks to a takedown and two near fall points. No points were scored in the second. Henschel started on top to begin the third period and was able to secure four near fall points and a bonus riding time point to finish off the victory.
Eleventh ranked
Easton Worachek defeated fourteenth ranked Walker Bents by a 10-7 decision. The first period was high scoring, with Bents notching a takedown and both wrestlers reversing the other. Bents led 6-3 after the first three minutes. Worachek started on bottom to begin the second and for a second time he was able to score two points on a reversal. Bents still led 7-5 however after two periods. Worachek was on top to begin the third and that is when he made his move, securing four near fall points to go along with a point for riding time.
Seventh ranked
Ben Durocher won by a 7-1 decision on Thursday. He led 3-0 after the first period and added four more points in the second with an escape and a takedown. He scored one final point on a stalling call in the third.
Ninth ranked
Dajun Johnson won by an 11-2 major decision over fifthteenth ranked Kole Marko. Johnson scored twice in the first on takedowns, leading to a 6-1 lead after three minutes. Marko scored the only point of the second period with an escape. Johnson owned the third period, scoring four points on an escape and a takedown. He also earned a point for riding time.
Sixth ranked Drake Hayward scored the only team points for the Mavericks on Thursday, defeating
Crosby Schlosser by a 17-4 major decision.
Third ranked
Reece Worachek got Parkside back on the right foot with a tight 9-8 win by decision over Evan Farley. The bout was tied 4-4 after the first, with both wrestlers earning points on a takedown and escape. Worachek led 5-4 after the second period thanks to an escape. The third period was much like the first, with both Wrestlers earning points on takedowns and escapes. However the last takedown and following ride from Worachek was enough to secure the win.
Chase Stegall earned Parkside's only tech fall win of the night, winning 17-0 over Jesus Gonzalez. Stegall started quick, scoring 13 first period points on a takedown and ten near fall points. He started on top to begin the second period and earned four more near fall points with 59 seconds remaining to close out the bout.
Seventh ranked
Lloyd Reynolds won a highly contested battle over Callen Smithpeter by a 1-0 decision. The lone point of the contest came in the second period when Reynolds started on bottom and was able to earn a point with an escape.
Parkside will return to action on Friday night when they take on top ranked St. Cloud State in a battle for the top spot in the NSIC. The dual is set to begin at 5:30pm from St. Cloud. Links to coverage can be found at ParksideRangers.com/coverage.
