Four Wrestlers Earn All-American Honors, Advance to Day Two of 2024 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships

Park City, KS - The No. 7 ranked Parkside Wrestling team took to the national stage on Friday, competing on the first day of the 2024 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships. After the first day, Parkside sits in sixth place as a team, with four wrestlers advancing to day two and securing All-American status. The four 2024 All-Americans are Shane Corrigan, Brody Hemauer, Reece Worachek, and Jalen Spuhler. Corrigan, Hemauer and Worachek all will wrestle for a spot in the national finals tomorrow. Spuhler is fighting for third place. 
 
No. 2 Shane Corrigan went 2-0 on the day, securing All-American honors for a second straight year, along with a spot in the semifinals. Shane opened the tournament with a 12-3 major decision over Luke Acuna of Ashland. The quarterfinal bout was a close one. Corrigan led 4-3 entering the third period and was able to score four points in the period, securing a 9-5 decision over Anthony Aniciete of Tiffin. With the win, Corrigan secures a spot in the semifinals and All-American honors for a second straight year. He will face third-seeded Christian Mejia of McKendree in the semifinals on Saturday.
 
No. 8 Brody Hemauer went 2-0 on Friday, securing a spot in the semifinals and 2024 All-American Honors. He opened his tournament with a tight 4-0 win by decision over Brandon Matthews of Lander. Then in the quarterfinals, he came out strong and held on late, fending off first-seeded Scott Joll of UNC Pembroke by a 12-11 decision. Brody came out quickly, picking up a takedown and four near-fall points in the first 45 seconds of the match. He picked up three more points in the period and led 10-3 after the first. Joll slowly clawed within 10-6 after two, but Brody was able to fend off the top seed in the third 12-11 to secure a spot in the semifinals and All-American honors. He will face fourth-seeded Josh Kenny of Grand Valley State in the semifinals Saturday.
 
The three-time NCAA Championship qualifier and fifth-seeded Reece Worachek went 2-0 on Friday, securing his third All-American honors and a spot in the semifinals. He opened the day by defeating Markis Hill of Emmanuel by a 12-1 major decision. Then in the quarterfinals, Reece had a close battle with Cole Grey of Western Colorado. Worachek picked up the only takedown of the contest in the first minute of the period. He then had an escape point in the second which was enough to secure the 4-2 decision and All-American honors. He will face the top seed Ty McGeary of West Liberty in the semifinals on Saturday.
 
Jalen Spuhler earned All-American status for the second straight year. He went 3-1 on Friday, securing All-American status. He is also still fighting for third place in the 149lb bracket. Jalen opened the day by defeating the top seed Christian Small of Lake Erie by a 10-8 decision. Spuhler then lost a 13-11 decision to Cody Thompson of the Colorado School of Mines in the quarterfinals. Jalen recovered, defeating Joey Semerad of McKendree by a 4-2 decision in the consolation round to secure All-American status. The bout was tied 0-0 at the end of the first. The only point in the second was an escape for Semerad on an escape. Spuhler tied the bout early in the third with an escape of his own, he then picked up a takedown with 56 seconds left in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Jalen was able to hang on from there, securing the 4-2 decision and All-American honors. He will face Devan Moore of Newberry in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday.
 
No. 4 Cayden Henschel went 1-2 on Friday. Cayden opened the championships with an 8-6 win by decision over Jake Niffenegger of Mercyhurst. Then in the quarterfinals, Henschel had the lead through two, but ultimately fell to Ronan Schuelke of McKendree. Then in the wrestlebacks, Henschel came up short in a tough bout with Angel Flores of Angelo State by a 12-7 decision. His season comes to a close, making his second straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Championships.
 
Ben Durocher went 1-2 on the day. He opened the tournament with an 8-2 loss by decision to third-seeded Gabe Johnson of Central Oklahoma. Then in wrestlebacks, he defeated Ryan Wilson of Western Colorado by a 4-2 decision to advance to the final round of the night. There he came up short by a 4-2 decision to fourth-seeded Devin Bahr of Northern State, bringing his season to a close at his first NCAA Division II Championships.
 
Lloyd Reynolds went 0-2 on the day. His tournament opened with a late loss to No. 6 Ryan Herman of Mary. In his first consolation bout, Lloyd fell short by an 8-5 decision to Tyler Haynes of McKendree. Reynolds' season comes to a close, making his first appearance in the NCAA Division II Championships.
 
 The second day of the 2024 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships will begin at 11:00am tomorrow from Park City. If any of the Rangers would advance to the national finals, those would take place at 8:00pm on Saturday. Links to coverage can be found at ParksideRangers.com/coverage
