KENOSHA, Wis. (November 23, 2024) – The Parkside wrestling team hosted their first home competition of the year, the Jim Koch Wisconsin Open, on Saturday. The Rangers showcased their talent with a strong team performance, highlighted by eight individuals reaching the finals and three wrestlers securing championships.
Tenth ranked
Matthew Chi won his second open of the season on Saturday, going 4-0 to win the 133lb championship. Chi opened the day with a tough 4-3 win by decision over Breyden Whorton of Thomas More. Chi won his quarterfinal bout by a 12-7 decision. In the semifinals, Chi beat Sam Spencer of St. Cloud State 3-1 in tiebreak one. Then in the championship bout, Chi defeated No. 7 ranked Caleb Meekins of St. Cloud State 9-6 in a sudden victory.
Fifth ranked
Cayden Henschel kept his perfect record going Saturday, winning the 141lb championship. Henschel opened the day with a 21-5 tech fall win. In the quarterfinals, Cayden defeated Dylan Coy, from the University of Wisconsin by a 12-4 major decision. In the semifinals, Henschel defeated Rhett Koenig from Minnesota by a 13-7 decision. In the championship, Cayden fell behind in the first, but took the lead in the second and had control before Dawson Johnson from Minnesota had to retire due to injury.
Fifth ranked
Ben Durocher won the championship in the 157lb weight class. He opened the day with a 16-0 tech fall win. Ben won by decisions in the next two rounds to advance to the semifinals. There, he defeated Daniel Uribe by an 11-2 major decision. In the championship, Durocher defeated Logan Swaw of Illinois by a 4-1 sudden victory to claim the title.
Fourth ranked
Shane Corrigan finished second in the 125lb weight class. He opened the day with a win by tech fall before beating Archer Heelan of St. Cloud by a 10-1 major decision to move into the semifinals. Corrigan defeated Jason Strope in the semifinals by an 11-0 major decision. In the championship, Corrigan came up short against Blake Beissel, an unattached wrestler from the University of Minnesota.
Dajun Johnson finished second in the 165lb weight class. He opened the day with a win by fall over Kaden Lone in the first round. In the quarterfinals Johnson had a close battle, defeating Andrew Knick of Findlay by an 8-5 score in sudden victory. In the semifinals Johnson defeated Derek Johnson of St. Cloud State by a 7-2 decision. Dajun then faced off with No. 6 ranked Nick Novak in the finals. Johnson came up just short in a tough battle by a 4-1 score in sudden victory.
Third ranked
Reece Worachek finished second in the 184lb weight class. Reece was dominant in the first two rounds, winning by tech fall in both bouts. In the semifinals, Worachek defeated Zeke Waltz by a 4-1 decision. In the championship, Reece came up short against Darion Johnson which secured the second-place finish.
Chase Stegall finished second in the 197lb weight class. He started Saturday with a first-round win by fall. In the quarterfinals, he beat Brendan Lockart of St. Cloud State by a 7-3 decision. Chase won a close semifinal bout, defeating Nathan Fury of St. Cloud State by a 6-4 decision. Stegall came up short in the championship, falling to No. 4 ranked Dominic Murphy.
Tenth ranked
Lloyd Reynolds finished second in the 285lb weight class. After winning his opening bout, Reynolds won by a second-round fall over Vito Masa of St. Cloud State. In the semifinals, Lloyd defeated Jadon Mims by a 9-4 decision. Reynolds came up short in the championship bout, losing by a 9-5 decision to No. 2 ranked La'Ron Parks of St. Cloud State.
Easton Worachek finished third overall in the 157lb class. Easton opened the day winning by a first-round fall. He then defeated Gavin Model from Wisconsin to move to the semifinals. After a setback in the semifinals, Worachek rebounded to defeat Maclain Morency by a 4–1 sudden victory in the consolation semifinals. In the third-place bout, Easton defeated James Hoskinson of McKendree by a 5-4 decision.
Jordan Blanchard finished third overall in the 197lb weight class. He won by fall five times on Saturday. Blanchard's only setback came in the semifinals to Nathan Fury. Blanchard secured the third-place finish by winning by a second-round pin of Derek Badgley from Grand Valley State.
Joey Roti finished fourth in the 133lb weight class. He went 3-2 on the day, winning his first two matches before a loss in the semifinals. Roti recovered, winning in the consolation semifinals before coming up short by a 2-1 decision in the third-place match.
Jordan Craft finished fourth in the 149lb class. He went 4-2 on the day.
Kaden Hooker finished fifth in the 197lb weight class. Hooker went 3-2 on Saturday closing out the day with a 5-4 win by decision over Nathan Fury of St. Cloud State.
