No. 4 Parkside Rolls Past No. 8 Maryville 30-6 to Open 2024-25 Season

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The No. 4 ranked Parkside Wrestling team opened the 2024-25 season on Friday night, taking on No. 8 ranked Maryville at the Wisconsin Showcase hosted on the campus of the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. Parkside came out firing, winning the first six bouts of the night, en route to a 30-6 victory.

"Overall it was a fantastic team win to start the year," said head coach Nick Becker. "There are definitely some things to work on but I'm proud of these guys. They are a fun group to coach and it's always great to see them perform well. Thank you to UW-Lacrosse for being great hosts and to Maryville for making the long trip. Hopefully the rest of our team can carry the momentum into tomorrow at Stevens Point Open."
 
No. 4 ranked Shane Corrigan opened the night for the Rangers in the 125lb bout. The 2024 All-American started the season in a big way, picking up five takedowns and a near fall in the opening period, downing Sham Shafer by a 19-4 technical fall.
 
Joey Roti kept things going, defeating No. 4 ranked Evan Binder by a 10-1 major decision. The bout was tied 0-0 after the first period, but an early takedown gave Roti the lead. Roti led 3-1 after the second and secured a reversal, a four point near fall and a point for riding time in the third to pick up the major decision victory.
 
In a battle of two of the top seven wrestlers at 141lbs, it was No. 5 Cayden Henschel who took care of business, defeating No. 7 Kody Ketchum by an 8-2 decision. Henschel scored first, picking up an early takedown in the first period. Ketchum picked up the only point of the second period with an escape. Henschel built on his lead in the third, picking up an escape, takedown, and a point for riding time to secure the 8-2 win which gave Parkside a 12-0 lead after three bouts.
 
No. 4 ranked Jalen Spuhler started the season strong, shutting out Dylan Gvillo 8-0. Spuhler struck first, taking down Gvillo with just 12 seconds to go in the first period. Spuhler scored four more points in the second with an escape and a takedown. He picked up one more point for riding time to secure the 8-0 major decision.
 
No. 5 Ben Durocher picked up a close 5-3 win by decision to open his season over Andrew Huddleston. Durocher fell behind 3-0 early but picked up an escape and takedown of his own to take a 4-3 lead after the first period. Neither wrestler secured a point in the second, but Durocher was able to pick up an escape in the third to secure a 5-3 season opening win.
 
Dajun Johnson made a splash in his season debut, defeating No. 4 Cole Ritter by an 8-4 decision. Neither wrestler was able to score a point in the first, but both wrestlers scored an escape and takedown in the second, keeping the score even at 4-4 after two periods. Johnson took control in the third, picking up an escape point before a takedown late in the period would secure an 8-4 victory. His victory extended the Ranger lead to 22-0.
 
Maryville scored their first team points of the dual in the 174lb bout. Evan Morris defeated Crosby Schlosser by a 4-1 score in a sudden victory.
 
No. 3 Reece Worachek started his season with a bang. The three-time All-American defeated Brian Thorpe by an 18-2 technical fall. Worachek scored first, picking up a takedown in the first period. Worachek had a big second period, scoring a point on an escape, before taking Thorpe down three times. Reece picked up one more point in the period to take a 14-2 lead after two periods. Worachek picked up an escape and a takedown in the third to secure the 18-2 technical fall victory.
 
Maryville scored their only other points in the 197lb bout. Chase Stegall fell to Jeramiah Larson by a 9-3 decision.
 
In the other top-ten bout of the night, it was No. 10 Lloyd Reynolds who downed No. 4 Ryan Herman by a 10-3 decision. After neither wrestler was able to score a point in the first, it was Herman who was able to score an early escape point in the second. Reynolds countered by picking up two takedowns of his own to secure a 6-2 lead after two. Reynolds picked up another takedown midway through the third and picked up a point for riding time to secure the 10-3 win, which also secured the Rangers 30-6 team victory.
 
The Rangers will return to action on Saturday morning at the 2024 Pointer Open. The event is set to begin at 9:00am from the Skyward Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. A link to the brackets is available at ParksideRangers.com/coverage.
