KENOSHA, Wis. -- The No. 9 seed ranked Parkside wrestling team improved to 2-0 in duels this season, defeating No. 5 ranked McKendree 23-10 on Saturday.
"Today was an incredible day for Wisconsin Wrestling," remarked Head Coach Nick Becker. "I want to thank Coach Malecek at Lacrosse for creating the Wisconsin Wrestling Showcase a few years back and allowing us to bring it to Parkside. It's great for our sport and the state of Wisconsin as a whole. Also thanks to our staff at Parkside for executing an excellent event.
As for the guys, they continue to impress me with their competitive spirit. I think Brady Schuh stole the show with his big upset victory. He's a workhorse and this win is a great confidence booster for him. Shane Corrigan and Jalen Spuhler also looked great in knocking off All-Americans. Several others performed very well. Back at it Monday. Last but not least thanks to all the fans that came out and supported today! You created a great environment for us."
The night opened with a top five battle in the 125 lb weight class. No. 4 ranked Shane Corrigan was able to defeat No. 3 ranked Christian Mejia by a 9-2 decision. Corrigan had two takedowns during the bout and earned an extra point thanks to riding time.
McKendree tied the match up by winning by decision at 133 lbs. Arguably the most highly contested match of the night came at 141 lbs between No. 8 ranked Cayden Henschel and Joey Semerad. In a low scoring affair it was Henschel who was able to get an escape point during the third overtime period to win 3-2.
No. 2 ranked Jalen Spuhler took care of business Saturday, defeating No. 8 ranked Josh Laubach by a 12-3 major decision. Spuhler got two takedowns in the opening period en route to four key points for the Rangers.
No. 11 ranked Ben Durocher kept things going the Rangers way, winning by a 9-6 decision. Parkside led 13-3 at the intermission.
Brady Schuh came up big Saturday, defeating No. 5 ranked Cory Peterson 8-5 in a sudden victory. Schuh got the takedown in the overtime period to seal the victory.
McKendree picked up three points in the 174 lb match. Parkside answered quickly when No. 5 ranked Reece Worachek won by a 12-4 major decision. The Bearcats won one final match at 197, but Jason Guadarrama was able to put the bow on top, winning a 6-4 decision to close the night.
The Rangers will return to action on Saturday November 18th when they will compete at the Findlay Open. Links to brackets and coverage can be found at ParksideRangers.com.
