Gantz Wins Title, Six Rangers Place at Midwest Classic

HOW IT HAPPENED
Freshman Shane Corrigan returned on day two and wrestled his way back into the 125-pound bracket. Corrigan, who lost in round two yesterday, went on to win his next five matches until he fell in the 3rd place match to preseason No.12 ranked James Joplin of Lander. Corrigan finished in fourth in a very competitive bracket where he gathered four pins and one major decision in his 6-2 weekend. At 141-pounds redshirt sophomore Cayden Henschel also competed on Sunday, where he won his first match in a sudden victory. Henschel then went on to face No.8 Tate Murty and then No.7 ranked Grayston DiBlasi where he fell in both matches and finished in 8th for the tournament. Henschel went 4-3 on the weekend. 

Redshirt sophomore Jalen Spuhler continued his tournament on Sunday with two more wins as he went 4-2 on the weekend. Spuhler finished in 7th thanks to a close 12-11 decision in the 7th place match. No.10 ranked redshirt sophomore Ben Durocher came into Sunday needing a win in order to get a shot at the podium but he fell in his lone match of the day by 5-4 decision. 

The No.1 wrestler in the country at 165-pounds is Shane Gantz and he proved why on Sunday. Gantz took on No.6 ranked Jack Eiteljorge in the semifinal match where he won by a 6-2 decision. Gantz then won the championship match in a 4-2 decision as he went 5-0 on the weekend, improving to 21-0 on the season. 

Ranked No.4 at 184-pounds, redshirt sophomore Reece Worachek went 2-1 on Sunday including a win in the 7th place match by a 5-1 decision over No.11 ranked Josh Jones of McKendree. Worachek lost his consolation round match to No.12 ranked Brock Biddle of Pitt.-Johnstown. In the 285-pound bracket, redshirt sophomore and No.12 ranked Lloyd Reynolds picked up two more wins on Sunday before falling in the 5th place and taking 6th overall. Reynolds went 5-2 on the weekend, and moves to 19-2 on the season.

The Rangers took home 5th place as a team, improving nine spots from their day one finish thanks to six Rangers making the podium. Central Oklahoma, ranked No.3 took home the team title.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Rangers will take a few weeks off for the holidays before traveling to St. Cloud, Minnesota on January 12th to take on #1 ranked St. Cloud State at 7 p.m. in a dual.
