Rangers Drop Home Opener to Hillsdale

SOMERS, Wis. – Blair Arthur scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds, but Hillsdale defeated the Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball team 72-50 in the Rangers home opener on Saturday in DeSimone Gymnasium.

Hillsdale, which remained undefeated on the season at 4-0, took advantage of 23 Wisconsin-Parkside turnovers which resulted in 22 points for the Chargers.

Wisconsin-Parkside, which dropped to 0-3 on the season, also received eight points from sophomore Taylor Stephen. Stephen also tied for the team lead with six rebounds and dished out a team-high three assists.

Brittney Fair finished with seven points, while Shelby Cheston had six points and four blocked shots for the Rangers.

Maddy Reed led Hillsdale with 11 points off the bench, while Makenna Ott, Allie Dittmer and Morgan Blair each scored 10 points.

The Chargers jumped out to an early lead as a layup by Julia Wacker gave Hillsdale a 9-2 lead with 6:18 to play in the first quarter.

After Arthur trimmed the lead to 13-8 with a three-pointer, Hillsdale responded with a 6-0 run fueled by four free throws to take a 19-8 lead with 1:23 left in the first quarter.

Arthur connected on another three-pointer for the Rangers to trim the lead to 19-11, but Ott answered with a three-pointer to increase the lead to 22-11 with 32 seconds remaining in the first.

Asiah Lawson converted a layup with 10 seconds remaining to cut the Chargers lead to 22-13 at the end of the first quarter.

After Ott opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to increase the lead to 25-13, the Rangers rallied to get back into the game.

Taylor scored four points during a 14-4 run that cut the Hillsdale lead to 29-27 with 5:22 to play before halftime.

Hillsdale answered with a 14-2 run to close the second quarter that increased the Chargers lead to 43-29 at the intermission.

Wisconsin-Parkside opened the third quarter with baskets by Fair and Taylor that helped cut the lead to 45-33 with 7:36 to play.

Montague drilled a three-pointer with 6:43 to play in the third quarter that brought the Rangers to within 45-36 at the 6:43 mark of the period.

The Rangers trailed by 51-43 following a three-point play by Arthur with 2:14 remaining in the quarter before the Chargers closed the period on a three-pointer by Michele Boykin and a jumper from Brittany Gray to take a 56-43 lead after three.

Wisconsin-Parkside could get no closer than 13 points in the fourth quarter and Hillsdale held as much as a 22-point lead on two occasions.

Wisconsin-Parkside returns to action on Sunday (Nov. 20) when it faces Northern Iowa in an exhibition game at 2 p.m. The game will be aired live on ESPN3.
