Jake Verhagen and
Kyle Flanagan as the host Rangers disposed of Great Lakes Valley Conference nemesis Lewis University 82-70 on Monday night inside DeSimone Gymnasium. Verhagen led the Rangers with 21 points for the squad's ninth consecutive victory and 27th straight home GLVC win in a volatile contest with 11 lead changes and eight ties.
Â
The visiting Flyers (12-5, 4-3 GLVC) enjoyed a 49-47 lead with 14:23 remaining in the game before the Rangers (13-2, 6-1 GLVC) scored 17 of the next 19 points, staking a 64-51 lead with 8:54 left in the contest. Verhagen served as the catalyst for the run, scoring a layup to knot the score before
Chavares Flanigan hit a jumper to give the lead back to homestanding UW-Parkside. Verhagen further extended the Ranger lead with consecutive threes sandwiched around a Flanigan block as the Flyers misfired on six of their seven shot attempts during the five minute stretch.
Â
Lewis whittled Parkside's advantage down to seven with just over five minutes left but six straight points extended the Rangers lead back to double digits and remained that way for the rest of the night for the 12-point decision.
Â
A sluggish start saw Lewis tallied the opening six points but 10 of the next 12 came off the hands of Parkside players, taking a 10-8 lead with 15:25 left in the opening half. The two sides traded leads nine times in the opening half with neither team owning a lead greater than three as UW-Parkside took a 37-35 edge into the halftime break after
Kendale McCullum hit a jumper with nine ticks left.
Â
The Flyers reestablished a lead with 16:15 left in the game and held a razor thin margin before the Rangers' 17-2 spurt earned the hosts the necessary separation to play with the lead the rest of the night.
Â
Verhagen tallied five treys for the second consecutive game, finishing with 21 points in just 24 minutes of action, coming off the bench and shooting seven-for-11 from the floor. Flanagan also had a banner night off the bench, scoring 18 points in 19 minutes, hitting all five of his shots from the field and all eight of his free throws.
Andy Mazurczak added 17 while McCullum had nine points along with a team-high seven rebounds, six assists, and four steals.
Â
Kyle Nelson and Max Strus provided the one-two punch for Lewis, finishing with 23 and 22 points, respectively.
Â
Half of the Rangers' scoring output came from the bench as the Parkside reserves outdueled the Lewis bench by a 41-19 margin. Parkside forced 15 Lewis turnovers and owned a 17-4 edge in points off turnovers while hitting all 18 of its free throw attempts. The Green and White shot an impressive 60 percent (15-for-25) from the floor in the second stanza and finished the game shooting at a 50.9 percent (28-for-55) clip.
Â
The Rangers return to action on Thursday evening, hosting national-ranked GLVC East Division leaders Bellarmine University at 7:30 p.m.
