(Jan. 31, 2015)-- A dominant first half set the stage for a blowout victory on Saturday afternoon as the 20th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball squad breezed by Saint Joseph's College 82-55 inside DeSimone Gymnasium to remain tied for first place atop the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division standings.
The visiting Pumas (5-16, 2-9 GLVC) grabbed an early lead, scoring the first six points of the game as the Rangers (18-2, 10-1 GLVC) didn't get on the board until
Jimmy Gavin hit a layup with 15:08 left in the first half. Any thoughts of a letdown after Thursday's 72-68 victory over No.1 University of Indianapolis were quickly dismissed as a 15-2 run turned a one-point Ranger deficit into a 12-point advantage with 8:20 left in the half. UW-Parkside continued to pull away, enjoying a 44-22 lead after 20 minutes of play, shooting 63.0 percent (17-for-27) from the floor while limiting Saint Joseph's to shooting just 33.3 percent (eight-for-24).
The Rangers maintained at least a 22-point edge the entire second half, emptying the bench in a 27-point rout for the squad's 10th straight home victory. The win coupled with UIndy's 70-61 loss to host Lewis University reduces the tie atop the league standings to just two teams with UW-Parkside and Bellarmine University pacing the East Division with identical 10-1 records in conference play.
Gavin led all scorers with 17 points, hitting seven of his eight shots from the field while adding five assists. Mach hit four threes and ended with 15 points while
Kendale McCullum and
Mohamed Mohamed each added 11 points off the bench as all 14 players who suited up saw at least eight minutes of game action.
Cameron Vines, one of the GLVC's leading scorers, was limited to just 10 points while Jonah Coble tacked on 10 off the bench.
UW-Parkside owned a 37-17 rebounding advantage while owning a 42-18 edge in points in the paint. The Rangers finished the game shooting 58.9 percent (33-for-56) from the floor while canning 42.1 percent (eight-for-19) of their chances from beyond the arc.
Parkside returns to the hardwood on Thursday night, facing Rockhurst University at 7:30 p.m. in Kansas City.
