Rangers Best Bulldogs 77-69 in GLVC Opener

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. (Jan. 2, 2015)-- A balanced scoring attack proved too much for host Truman State University as the two-time defending Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division Champion University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball squad extended its win streak to five on Friday night with a 77-69 victory over the Bulldogs in the GLVC opener inside Pershing Arena. Five Rangers ended the contest in double figures, including a 17-point, 14-rebound performance from Zygimantas Riauka.

The visiting Rangers (9-1, 1-0 GLVC) owned a 41-31 lead at the halftime intermission, utilizing a 13-2 run to close a half that featured eight lead changes and four ties. After trading early leads a Jordan Mach three gave UW-Parkside a five-point buffer with 11:06 left in the opening stanza. Truman (9-3, 1-1 GLVC) responded reclaiming the lead at 24-23 and again at 29-28 with 4:28 left in the first half. A Mohamed Mohamed three with 3:11 left sparked a 13-2 Ranger run, punctuated by another Mohamed trey with two ticks left as the Rangers enjoyed the 10-point halftime lead.

UW-Parkside led by as many as 12 in the second half before seeing its lead reduced to just a point at 56-55 with 7:38 left. The Rangers answered with the next nine points and owned at least a five-point cushion the rest of the way en route to the road win, snapping Truman's eight game win streak.

Riauka paced the Rangers with his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 14 boards. Mohamed came off the bench and dropped all 16 of his points in the first half, shooting six-for-seven from the field. Jordan Mach and Jimmy Gavin both added 11 while Andy Mazurczak chipped in 10 points while dishing out seven assists. Kendale McCullum added seven points off the bench and was a menace defensively, securing four steals.

Seth Jackson powered the Bulldogs with 26 points and eight rebounds while Reed Mells added 20 points.

UW-Parkside finished the game shooting 51.8 percent (29-for-56) including 42.9 percent (six-for-14) from beyond the arc while owning a 40-25 rebounding edge. The Rangers additionally generated 23 bench points while TSU had zero.

The Rangers return to the court on Sunday afternoon, closing out the road swing with a 3 p.m. showdown against Quincy University.
