(Jan. 15, 2015)-- A big second half turned a tight contest into a blowout on Thursday night as the 22nd-ranked University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball team extended its win streak to nine games, outmuscling the University of Illinois Springfield 69-47 inside DeSimone Gymnasium. Four Rangers ended the night in double figures, including
Jordan Mach who stole the show by sinking a three in the second half to surpass the 1,000-point barrier in his career.
The homestanding Rangers (13-1, 5-0 GLVC) collected the opening 11 points of the game but the pesky Prairie Stars (6-7. 0-5 GLVC) battled back, utilizing an 11-1 spurt to close within a point before tying the game at 14 with 12:40 left in the opening stanza. UW-Parkside's lead mushroomed back up to eight points after a Mach three but UIS finished the half on a 9-2 run as the Green and White owned a razor-thin 29-28 lead after 20 minutes of action.
Illinois Springfield tallied the first bucket of the second half to claim its first lead of the day but it proved fleeting as the hosts answered with a 13-2 run over the next five minutes to reestablish a double digit lead. Mach surpassed the 1,000-point barrier at the end of the run, sinking a three with 15:44 remaining to push his career total to 1,002. Mach would go on to finish with 14 points as Parkside owned a comfortable lead the rest of the way, claiming the 22 point decision to remain one of the two unbeaten squads in GLVC play.
Jimmy Gavin finished with a game-high 15 points and seven assists while grabbing six boards and collecting three steals while Mach sunk four of his nine attempts from distance to notch 14.
Mohamed Mohamed proved again to be an asset off the bench with 13 points, shooting four-for-six from the floor while
Andy Mazurczak added 11.
Jamall Millison led UIS with 14 points while Sammie Elem had a game-high 10 rebounds.
UW-Parkside finished the game shooting 44.4 percent (24-for-54) from the field, including shooting 50 percent (14-for-28) in the second half while limiting UIS to shooting just 30.4 percent (17-for-56), including a paltry 25.9 percent (seven-for-27) over the final 20 minutes of play. The Rangers were outscored 23-18 in the paint but more than made up for that with a 19-5 edge in points off turnovers.
Parkside, off to its best start in program history, returns to the hardwood on Saturday afternoon, closing out the homestand against McKendree University at 3 p.m.
