KENOSHA, Wis. — Wis.-Parkside went 2-0 on Friday at the Hampton Inn Invitational, earning a 3-2 victory over Jamestown before sweeping receiving-votes Nova Southeastern 3-0 at De Simone Arena. The Rangers opened the day with a 25-23, 16-25, 22-25, 25-16, 15-7 victory over Jamestown, hitting .529 with 10 kills and just one error in the decisive fifth set while holding Jamestown to three kills. Wis.-Parkside then closed out the day with a 25-18, 25-23, 25-23 sweep of Nova Southeastern, finishing with 49 kills and a .356 hitting percentage while limiting the Sharks to 33 kills and a .196 hitting percentage.
After Jamestown moved in front 10-6, the Rangers put together seven straight points, starting with a
Sierra Kilbourn kill and continuing through
Emily Zaper's service ace, two Jamestown attack errors and three more Kilbourn kills for a 13-10 lead. Jamestown came back to tie the set at 13-13 and later went ahead 19-16, but kills by
Avary Polavin and Zaper and a block by
Abby Alms and
Maia Olson brought the Rangers even at 19-19. The teams traded points late until Polavin's kill gave the Rangers set point at 24-23, and a Jamestown attack error closed the opening set 25-23.
Jamestown built early separation in the second set, moving ahead 7-2 after kills by Caroline Puetz and Gracie Adamson, a Sophie Ketterling ace and two Rangers attack errors. Alms helped the Rangers slow the run with two kills, and the Rangers worked back within 14-10 behind kills from Zaper and Polavin and a
Natalie Harris service ace. Jamestown answered from there, scoring five straight points after the Rangers got to 15-11 and later extending the margin to 24-12. The Rangers took the next four points, including a Zaper kill and a Zaper block, before Jamestown closed the set 25-16.
The Rangers started the third set with kills from Polavin and Kilbourn and later built a 7-2 lead after a
Lauren Peters service ace and a Jamestown attack error. Jamestown cut the margin to 7-6 with a four-point stretch, and after Kilbourn and Olson helped the Rangers stay in front, Jamestown pulled even at 10-10 and again at 12-12. The Rangers led 13-12 on another Kilbourn kill, but Jamestown scored the next four points, including consecutive Gracie Adamson kills and a Caroline Puetz block, to move ahead 16-13 before stretching the margin to 23-17. The Rangers answered with four straight points, capped by
Monica Lukasiewicz's block, to get within 23-21, but Charlotte Lempka had two late kills for Jamestown as the Rangers dropped the set 25-22.
The fourth set stayed tight through 11-11, with the Rangers getting early kills from Lukasiewicz, Zaper and Olson and service aces from Zaper and Olson before Jamestown moved ahead 13-11 on a Polavin attack error and an Addison Ertz kill. The Rangers answered with five straight points to go in front 16-13, using Polavin kill, a Lukasiewicz/Kilbourn block, a Kilbourn kill and two Jamestown attack errors. After Jamestown cut it to 16-14, Zaper put down consecutive kills to make it 18-14, and an Olson/Zaper block pushed the Rangers ahead 19-15. Jamestown got one more point to make it 19-16, but the Rangers closed the set with six straight points, including an Olson block, kills by Zaper and Olson, and three Gracie Adamson attack errors for a 25-16 win.
After the fifth set reached 4-4, Zaper put the Rangers in front with a kill from
Hailey Warfel, and kills by Polavin and Olson helped stretch the lead to 9-4. Jamestown stopped that run with a Kyleigh Schopp kill, but Polavin followed with three consecutive kills, all set by Warfel, and Dani Kopacz served an ace to make it 13-5. Polavin kill pushed the Rangers to 14-6, and after Jamestown got one point back, a Jamestown service error ended the set at 15-7.
Emily Zaper led the Rangers with 17.5 points, recording 14 kills, 10 digs and two service aces. Zaper also reached a season-high with 14 kills.
Avary Polavin followed with a team-high 15 kills and 16.0 points, adding four digs and one solo block. Polavin has now recorded at least 15 kills in back-to-back games.
Natalie Harris led the team defensively with 29 digs, while also contributing three assists and one service ace.
Sierra Kilbourn tallied 14 kills on a .400 hitting percentage, finishing with 14.5 points and one block assist. Kilbourn has now recorded at least 14 kills in two consecutive games.
Lucy Russ paced the Rangers with 27 assists and added six digs, marking her second consecutive game with at least 27 assists.
Hailey Warfel also contributed with a season-high 14 assists.
Parkside vs Nova Southeastern
Lucy Russ put Parkside in front to start the first set with three consecutive service aces, and Parkside held a 7-3 lead after
Maia Olson and
Hailey Warfel combined on a block. Nova Southeastern scored the next three points to get within 7-6, but
Emily Zaper and Olson answered with kills as Parkside built a 10-6 lead. After Nova Southeastern was within 12-9, Parkside took four straight points on a service error and kills by
Sierra Kilbourn,
Avary Polavin and
Monica Lukasiewicz, with Russ assisting each kill, for a 16-9 lead. Nova Southeastern later cut a 20-13 Parkside lead to 20-16, but Zaper ended that run with a kill, and the Rangers closed the set with a Polavin kill, a Lukasiewicz kill and a closing ace from Russ for a 25-18 win.
After Nova Southeastern went up 11-10 in the second set, Parkside tied it on a Warfel kill and moved in front 12-11 on a block by Olson and Warfel. Nova Southeastern tied the set at 12-12, but Polavin and Warfel added kills and Lukasiewicz teamed with Polavin on a block to push the Rangers ahead 15-12. The Rangers later led 21-18 before Nova Southeastern tied it at 22-22 and again at 23-23. Polavin answered with back-to-back kills from Warfel to close the set for Parkside, 25-23. Warfel achieved three kills for the first time this season.
The third set stayed even through 6-6 before Warfel and Lukasiewicz put down kills and another Lukasiewicz swing helped Parkside move ahead 9-6. Nova Southeastern came back with two Erika Spankus kills and an Abbie Roth ace for a 10-9 lead, and the teams traded points until kills by Zaper, Olson and Kilbourn moved Parkside in front 14-13. With the set tied at 16-16, Polavin's kill, a block by Lukasiewicz and Warfel, and another Polavin kill gave the Rangers a 19-16 edge, and the home side later stretched it to 22-18 on a Nova Southeastern service error, a bad set and Kilbourn's kill from Russ. Nova Southeastern pulled back to 22-21 on a Spankus kill and consecutive Spankus aces; after a Nova Southeastern service error and a Parkside service error moved the score to 23-22, Taylor Teaman's ace tied it at 23-23 before a Caiden Largent attack error and Zaper's kill from Russ closed Parkside's 25-23 set win.
Avary Polavin led the Rangers with 15 kills while hitting an impressive .483, a career-high hitting percentage, finishing with a team-high 16 points and adding two blocks. Polavin has now recorded at least 15 kills in three consecutive games.
Lucy Russ paced the team with 24 assists and a team-high four service aces, along with seven digs. Russ has recorded at least 24 assists in three straight games.
Natalie Harris led the Rangers defensively with 16 digs and added one assist, marking her third consecutive game with at least 16 digs.
Maia Olson anchored the defense at the net with a team-high five blocks, including two solo blocks, while adding three kills and 6.5 points. Olson also reached a milestone of 25 total blocks this season.
Monica Lukasiewicz contributed nine kills while hitting .533, adding two blocks and 10 points.
The Rangers return to De Simone Arena at 4 p.m. tomorrow to take on Hillsdale College in the final match of Day Two of the Hampton Inn Invitational.
