KENOSHA, Wis. — The Parkside volleyball team closed out the Hampton Inn Invitational with a dominant 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-18) sweep of (RV) Hillsdale on Saturday night at De Simone Arena. The Rangers improved to 6-1 on the season with the victory, finishing the invitational 3-0 on their home court while posting a 51-38 advantage in kills and an 8-2 edge in service aces.
After the opening set moved back and forth to 7-7, the Chargers used two Molly Kennedy kills during a three-point stretch to move in front 10-7, but the Rangers pulled even at 10-10 with help from
Avary Polavin and a block involving
Monica Lukasiewicz and Polavin. With the set tied 12-12,
Lauren Peters served the Rangers through four straight points, including an
Emily Zaper kill and a Peters ace, to put the Rangers ahead 16-12. The Chargers answered later with kills from Ellie Fles, Ella Vandermark and Hannah Baker as part of a push that tied the set at 18-18 and eventually gave the Chargers a 21-19 lead. The Rangers came back with kills from Zaper,
Hailey Warfel and Lukasiewicz to move ahead 22-21, and after the Chargers tied it twice, an Ellie Fles attack error and Zaper's kill from
Lucy Russ closed the set 25-23.
The Rangers built a 9-4 lead in the second set, getting three early kills from Lukasiewicz along with a
Maia Olson-Warfel block and another Olson kill. The Chargers worked back to move in front 11-10, with Hannah Baker contributing two kills before Molly Kennedy and Ivy Rex combined on a block, but a service error, a Zaper kill and a Peters ace put the Rangers back ahead 13-11. After the Chargers cut the margin to 17-16, Olson had a kill, the Rangers benefited from an attack error and Olson served consecutive aces to make it 21-16. Olson's three service aces exceeded her season average of 1.0. In the closing points, Polavin,
Sierra Kilbourn and Lukasiewicz each put down kills, and after the Chargers got within 24-22, an Ella Vandermark attack error ended the Rangers' 25-22 set win.
After the Chargers scored first, the Rangers answered with kills from Polavin, Kilbourn and Lukasiewicz to move ahead 4-1. The Rangers stretched the set to 11-3 after the Chargers pulled within 4-2, getting kills from Zaper, Kilbourn and Olson during the run. The Chargers cut into the margin in the middle of the set, getting three kills from Hannah Baker and later a Baker ace to close the score to 14-11, but the Rangers responded with a service error, Polavin kill and back-to-back Russ aces for an 18-11 lead. Russ has recorded 23 or more set assists in four straight games and achieved at least two serve aces in two consecutive games. The Chargers got back to 20-16, but Kilbourn, Zaper, Polavin and Olson added late kills as the Rangers closed out the set 25-18.
Natalie Harris led the Rangers defensively with 19 digs.
Avary Polavin and
Emily Zaper tied for the team high with 13 kills, with Polavin adding 13.5 points and four digs. Polavin has now recorded at least 13 kills in four consecutive games. Zaper added eight digs and 13.0 points.
Lucy Russ recorded 23 assists, seven digs and two service aces, reaching the 1,000-assist milestone for her career in the match. Russ has recorded 23 or more set assists in four straight games and achieved at least two service aces in two consecutive games.
Maia Olson tallied six kills on .308 hitting, three service aces, two blocks and 10.5 points.
Monica Lukasiewicz recorded two solo blocks and
Hailey Warfel also contributed a season-high 17 set assists.
The Rangers return to action on Friday, September 11, traveling to Big Rapids, Michigan, to take on No. 5 Ferris State at 5:00 p.m. CT.
