Mateski Goes 18-For-18 At Line, Rangers Split Season Series With Panthers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Luka Mateski set a new school record with 18 made free throws and Paxton Warden scored 25 points as Parkside picked up its second straight win, a 77-71 decision over Davenport on Thursday night at the DU Student Center.

Parkside (11-12, 5-10 GLIAC) earned just its second road win of the season and split the season series with the Panthers (12-11, 6-9 GLIAC) by leaning on the foul line late and dominating the glass. The Rangers finished +13 on the boards, 42-29, and went 26-for-28 at the stripe, including 20-for-21 in the second half.

The Rangers built the early cushion behind perimeter shot-making and timely second-chance plays. Parkside hit six of its 13 3-point attempts in the first half and led 36-29 at the break, with Josiah Palmer burying four first-half 3s as part of a 17-point night (6-for-16 FG, 4-for-12 3PT) while also handing out five assists.

Davenport kept contact with interior scoring and points off turnovers, finishing with a 40-22 edge in points in the paint and a 20-10 advantage in points off turnovers, but Parkside's rebounding and free throws steadily swung the margin back. The Rangers pushed the lead to 54-41 on a Palmer jumper with 12:54 left, then weathered multiple Panther runs as Davenport trimmed it to 69-64 with 2:24 to go.

That is when Parkside's composure at the line closed the door. Mateski, who did not make a field goal, went a perfect 18-for-18 from the free-throw line and scored 18 points, setting the program's single-game record for made free throws. Warden added 25 points on 8-for-15 shooting with eight rebounds and seven made free throws (7-for-8), and Palmer hit 4-for-12 from deep for the second straight game. Ethan Ivan chipped in six points on a perfect 2-for-3 from 3-point range, while the Rangers' bench added 27 points.

Davenport was led by Ken Walker's 26 points (8-for-19 FG, 3-for-9 3PT, 7-for-7 FT). Curtis Jackson scored 12, Alden Ritt added 10 and Aidan Moon finished with eight. The Panthers went 5-for-23 from 3-point range and 14-for-20 at the line, while Parkside held a 27-11 edge in bench points and finished with four blocked shots.

Parkside returns to action Saturday, Feb. 14, at No. 19 Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CT.
