Parkside Can’t Keep Pace In Second Half In 73-57 Loss At No. 19 GVSU

ALLENDALE, Mich. — Parkside stayed within striking distance for a half on Saturday, but No. 19 Grand Valley State used a dominant second-half push to pull away for a 73-57 win inside the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.

The Rangers trailed just 32-31 at the break after an early back-and-forth opening 20 minutes that featured six ties and four lead changes. Parkside never grabbed the lead, but kept the Lakers within one possession for much of the first half behind steady trips to the foul line, going 14-for-17 at the stripe before halftime.

Grand Valley State broke the game open after the break, outscoring Parkside 41-26 in the second half. The Lakers turned defense into offense and lived in transition, finishing with 19 fast-break points and 31 points off turnovers while capitalizing on 21 Parkside giveaways. Grand Valley also controlled the interior with a 36-18 advantage in points in the paint and added 19 second-chance points on 16 offensive rebounds.

Paxton Warden led Parkside with 19 points in 33 minutes, going 5-for-13 from the floor and 8-for-9 at the line. Luka Mateski added 12 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 at the stripe, while Zach Behn chipped in seven points and four rebounds. Jack Rose provided a spark off the bench with six points on 2-for-4 shooting, including 2-for-3 from three.

Parkside finished at 35% shooting overall (16-for-46) and 33% from three (6-for-18), but couldn't generate enough clean looks late as Grand Valley's pressure and pace dictated the second half. The Rangers committed 12 turnovers in the first half and 21 for the game, while the Lakers turned it over just seven times. Parkside also managed only 18 points in the paint and was held to six points off turnovers.

Grand Valley State received balanced production across the lineup, led by Mason Docks and Ethan Alderink with 14 points apiece. Trevor Smith Jr. added 13 points off the bench on 6-for-10 shooting, while Jalen Charity scored 11 and David Wilkerson finished with 10. The Lakers shot 39% overall (26-for-67) and 24% from three (7-for-29), but made their separation with a 50% second half (15-for-30) and a clean 7-for-7 performance at the free-throw line after intermission.

Parkside will return home for one final two-game homestand of the season, beginning Thursday when the Rangers host Purdue Northwest at 5:30 p.m. CT inside De Simone Arena.
