Parkside’s hot first half fades as Grand Valley State pulls away late

KENOSHA, Wis. – Parkside led at halftime and got a career-best-tying night from Paxton Warden, but No. Grand Valley State used a dominant second half to pull away for a 77-67 win Thursday night at De Simone Arena.

Parkside (9-8, 3-6 GLIAC) built a 42-36 halftime edge behind efficient offense, shooting 52% (14-of-27) in the opening 20 minutes and knocking down eight 3-pointers (8-of-14). The Rangers' ball movement and perimeter shot-making helped them trade punches early in a half that featured 10 lead changes and five ties.

Grand Valley State (14-3, 7-2 GLIAC), however, flipped the game after the break. The Lakers outscored Parkside 41-25 in the second half, holding the Rangers to 30% shooting (7-of-23) and just 3-of-11 from beyond the arc. Parkside went 8-of-17 at the line in the second half after going 6-of-9 in the first, finishing 14-of-26 (54%) on free throws.

The difference was most pronounced around the rim and on the glass. Grand Valley State finished with 40 points in the paint and a 44-34 rebounding advantage, including 17 offensive rebounds that fueled 15 second-chance points. Parkside was limited to 18 points in the paint and nine offensive boards, producing nine second-chance points. The Lakers also got 21 bench points to Parkside's 18.

Warden matched a career-high with 26 points to lead Parkside, going 8-of-13 from the field and drilling five 3-pointers (5-of-7). Luka Mateski added 16 points, going 8-of-12 at the free-throw line, while Braden McGlothlin scored nine points on three 3s (3-of-7) and added four assists. Ethan Ivan chipped in seven points on two triples (2-of-6). Fawaz Surakat did his work defensively and on the boards, tying a career-high with 11 rebounds while adding three blocks.

Grand Valley State was led by Ethan Alderink's 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jalen Charity added 16 points, while Trevor Smith Jr. provided a spark off the bench with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting and 2-of-3 from three. David Wilkerson finished with 11 points and four assists.

Parkside finished the night at 42% shooting (21-of-50) and 44% from three (11-of-25), but the Rangers' second-half drought and the Lakers' extra possessions proved decisive. Grand Valley State shot 44% (30-of-68) overall, going 7-of-27 from deep and 10-of-20 at the line.

The Rangers return to De Simone Arena on Saturday, Jan. 24, when they host Davenport at 3 p.m. CT.
