KENOSHA, Wis. – Davenport's Ken Walker caught fire early and the Panthers led wire-to-wire Saturday, defeating Parkside 68-54 inside De Simone Arena to hand the Rangers their fourth straight GLIAC loss.
Davenport (11-7, 5-5 GLIAC) built its cushion in the opening 20 minutes, hitting 15 of 26 shots (58%) and 5 of 11 from 3-point range (45%) to take a 36-20 lead into halftime. Walker scored 22 of his game-high 28 points before the break, going 9-for-17 from the field and 6-for-12 from deep for the game while adding four assists. Dylan Smith added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Marshaun Flakes finished with nine points.
Parkside (9-9, 3-7 GLIAC) struggled to find rhythm early, shooting just 6-for-28 (21%) in the first half and 2-for-14 (14%) from three, and the deficit ballooned as the Panthers repeatedly answered Ranger empty possessions with clean looks at the other end. Davenport's early shot-making pushed the margin to 20 points late in the half, including a late Walker triple that made it 36-16 before Parkside trimmed it to 36-20 at the break.
The Rangers steadied themselves after intermission and won the second half 34-32, but the first-half hole proved too deep. Parkside shot 13-for-31 (42%) in the second half, yet continued to misfire from long range (3-for-15, 20%) and finished the day 5-for-29 from three (17%). Luka Mateski led Parkside with 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting, while Paxton Warden finished with 12 points but went 3-for-19 from the floor and 1-for-9 from three. Logan Zahour provided a lift off the bench with eight points on 3-for-4 shooting and 2-for-3 from deep.
Raphael Nagau Trouart anchored the glass with 11 rebounds to go with six points, and Fawaz Surakat added six points, nine rebounds and a pair of blocks. Parkside finished with 33 rebounds to Davenport's 35 and generated 15 second-chance points, but the Rangers were held to 32% shooting overall (19-for-59) and just 28 points in the paint, while Davenport scored 34 in the paint and got nine fast-break points. The Panthers also won points off turnovers 14-10, and there were no lead changes.
Parkside begins its first set of GLIAC rematches next week, starting Thursday, Jan. 29, at Saginaw Valley State in University Center, Mich. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
