Parkside Earns First GLIAC Victory over No. 14 GVSU, Splits Double Header

Kenosha, Wis. – Parkside earned its first conference victory of the 2025 season over No. 14 Grand Valley State. Sam Mommer was the catalyst, needing just 83 pitches to complete a seven-inning gem. In the nightcap, Grand Valley State got its revenge and clinched the series.

GAME ONE
The Parkside Rangers delivered a statement win on their home turf, taking down No. 14 Grand Valley State 4-1 in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader at Simmons Field. Behind a dominant complete-game performance from Sam Mommer and a gritty offensive effort, the Rangers locked up a crucial conference victory.

Mommer was untouchable, silencing the Lakers' offense with a masterful seven-inning effort. He allowed just three hits and one earned run while striking out six without issuing a single walk. After conceding a run in the first, the freshman right-hander locked in, retiring 18 of the next 21 batters and keeping Grand Valley's potent lineup off balance all afternoon.

Parkside took control in the second inning, capitalizing on Grand Valley's mistakes. After back-to-back singles from Owen Brock and Jackson Lindquist, the Rangers applied pressure. A fielding error by the Lakers opened the door for Parkside to plate two unearned runs, and Angel Rades capped off the rally by drawing a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-1.

While Mommer was dealing, the Rangers tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Josh Wicker reached on a defensive miscue and later crossed the plate thanks to a textbook sacrifice bunt from Jake Petasek, extending the lead to 4-1.

Parkside's defense was flawless, backing up Mommer with clean execution and clutch plays in key moments. Grand Valley, meanwhile, struggled to find answers at the plate, managing just one baserunner over the final three innings.

GAME TWO
Parkside put together a furious ninth-inning rally but fell short in a 7-5 loss to No. 14 Grand Valley State in game two of the series on Friday afternoon at Simmons Field.

Grand Valley State jumped ahead early, scoring twice in the first inning on a ground-rule double by Ryan Dykstra and a Parkside throwing error. The Lakers added two more in the third, capitalizing on a hit batter, a walk, and a sacrifice fly to take a 4-0 lead.

Parkside got on the board in the fourth when Storti plated Sayles, who had reached on an error, with a groundout. The game remained 4-1 until the seventh when Jonas Gulbrandsen launched a three-run homer to left-center, pushing GVSU's lead to 7-1.

The Rangers trailed 7-1 entering the bottom of the ninth but strung together four runs on four hits to make things interesting. Dylan Sayles and Owen Brock led off with back-to-back singles, and Carter Storti followed with another base hit to load the bases. Max Johnson then delivered a two-run double, cutting the deficit to 7-3. Jackson Lindquist brought home another run with a groundout, and Josh Wicker followed with an RBI groundout to make it 7-5. However, Grand Valley State recorded the final out to secure the win.

Rangers' starter Noah Gerritson took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs over 4.1 innings, striking out two. Austin Grube pitched 2.2 innings of relief, allowing three runs, and Storti tossed two scoreless frames to close the game.
