Kenosha, Wis. – Despite an excellent first quarter, Parkside struggled in the second quarter, which proved to be the difference in the game. Parkside got solid production from Chloe Van Zeeland, who posted 16 points, and a 13-point double-double from Lillie Petersen. However, they fell 73-64 at home.
Inside the box score:
- Chloe Van Zeeland netted double figures for the sixth time in seven home games this season.
- Lillie Petersen logged her second double-double of the season.
- Cassidy Arni was the third and final Ranger in double figures with 12 points.
How it happened:
The first quarter of the game was arguably the best first quarter the Rangers have had all season. After a slow start with just eight total points on the board through four minutes, the scoring opened up. Lillie Petersen sparked the fire, connecting on a triple to put Parkside ahead. Chloe Van Zeeland and Sheridan Flauger followed with two-point makes, and the Rangers were rolling. Petersen would later connect on another three-pointer in the first quarter, helping Parkside build a seven-point lead. The Rangers led 23-19 after a highly competitive first quarter.
Despite an incredible start to the game, Parkside fell into a slump on both sides of the floor in the second quarter. They were outscored 21-5 in the period and trailed 40-28 at the half.
Parkside got a jolt of energy from Cassidy Arni to begin the third quarter, as she nailed a triple to put Parkside on the board. However, Wayne State continued to have answers for every Parkside bucket. Alli Hampel got involved, scoring all four of her points in the third quarter, while Van Zeeland continued to produce offense for Parkside. In fact, Hampel led the Rangers on a run to get back into the game. Both Petersens followed with points, as Kaalyn Petersen sank her first triple of the season to pull Parkside within six points with two minutes remaining in the quarter. However, Wayne State, as they did all game, responded to stretch the lead back to nine points heading into the fourth quarter.
Parkside continued to battle. In fact, they won or tied every quarter except the second, which proved to be the difference. Toward the end of the game, the Rangers pulled within four points after Jaelyn Derlein connected on a three-pointer. But with just 24 seconds remaining, the comeback effort fell just short. Parkside dropped to 12-7 overall and 7-5 in GLIAC play.
