Rangers Set to Embark on GLIAC Road Trip to Michigan

1/8/2025 1:54:00 PM

Kenosha, Wis. – Following Parkside's GLIAC home opener, the Rangers are once again set to hit the road for another trip. Parkside is slated for contests against Wayne State on Thursday and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday. The Rangers enter the week on a three-game winning streak and currently sit in a tie for second place with a 3-1 conference record.

Scouting Parkside:
The Rangers made a splash in their first game of the 2025 portion of the season. First, they handled and beat Purdue Northwest on the road, powered by a combined 35 points from Cassidy Arni and Peighton Nelson. The team carried similar energy and momentum into the contest against Roosevelt on Monday night. Parkside dominated Roosevelt, winning by a significant margin, 72-46. Seven players scored at least five points in the victory.

Arni has led the way offensively for Parkside this season, ranking seventh in the GLIAC with 14.2 points per game. Arni helps lead an offense that ranks as the third-highest scoring team in the conference. In addition to Arni's success, the Rangers have seen significant production from Nelson, who is also top 10 in scoring with 12.1 points per contest.

After earning their first conference win of the season, another road trip awaits Parkside. However, being on the road hasn't hindered this team; instead, they have risen to the occasion. They possess an impressive 7-1 record on the road, marking their best start based on available statistics. Parkside has won five of their last six games and will look to extend their hot streak this weekend.

FULL GAME NOTES HERE

Scouting Wayne State:
The Warriors of Wayne State are fresh off a weekend split on the road. The team first downed Lake Superior State in blowout fashion, then lost to Ferris State, a team previously in the WBCA Top 25. They are 5-7 overall and 2-2 in GLIAC play entering the weekend. A victory over Parkside this weekend would give them a chance to leapfrog the Rangers in the conference standings, with another game scheduled for Saturday against Purdue Northwest.

Carrie Lohr is once again at the helm of the Warriors, leading her squad into battle for the 14th consecutive season. Lohr, now the winningest coach in the history of the program, is coming off a season that ended in the GLIAC quarterfinals. Her team this season ranks in the middle of the conference in scoring, averaging 67.3 points per night. Senior Shea Tripp, a preseason All-GLIAC selection, has been a big part of that success, as she leads Wayne State with 12.1 points per game.

Scouting Saginaw Valley State:
After a 10-19 campaign in 2023-24, the Cardinals are already close to reaching that win total. They are 7-5 overall with a 1-3 GLIAC record, marking their best start to a season in two years. In conference play, Saginaw Valley State's losses include #1 Grand Valley State, previously ranked Ferris State, and Davenport. Meanwhile, their sole victory came in their most recent game against Lake Superior State. The Cardinals are dangerous, with two of the top four scorers in the conference: Megan McCalls (16.7) and Aleshia Jones (15.7).

The Cardinals have struggled offensively this season, averaging just 60.2 points per game, which ranks in the bottom third of the conference. Despite their lack of offensive production, the Cardinals have held their own thanks to a tremendous defensive structure. Currently, Saginaw Valley State ranks third in the GLIAC in scoring defense, allowing just 60.0 points per game. The only teams with better defensive numbers are Ferris State and Northern Michigan.

History:
As Parkside and Saginaw Valley State gear up for their 19th meeting, their all-time record sits at an even 9-9. Recently, Parkside has had the upper hand, winning three of their last four against Wayne State. In Detroit specifically, Parkside is 5-4. Conversely, Parkside has found much more success against Saginaw Valley State, leading the all-time series 11-4. However, all four losses have come in University Center, including a 69-49 defeat last season.
