ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Parkside softball team returned to action at the Rosemont Dome Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Rangers dropped a tough 6-5 game to Minnesota Duluth that would go to nine innings to decide a winner. The Rangers bounced back well, capturing a 5-4 victory over Upper Iowa to close out Friday's games.
Game One
Ellie Curtis would get the starting nod in the circle in game one for the Rangers. The Sophomore would go the full 8.2 innings the Rangers would play defensively. She would record four strikeouts and just three earned runs.
Cassie Rutledge would have an absurd day at the dish for the Rangers. The grad student went 5-5 with a run to her credit.
Rylee Baetz would be the team's top run producer driving in a team high two RBIs in the game.
The Rangers would jump on the board in the top of the first inning.
Haley Remington would drive in the game's first run with a single to centerfield, scoring
Taylor Delgado.
Rylee Baetz would do her job, driving in a run on a groundout to third base to score Rutledge. The final run of the inning would be scored on a two out double to leftfield to score Remington. The Rangers would end the inning with the 3-0 lead.
UMD would answer quickly, posting a run of their own on a one out fielder's choice to cut into the Ranger lead 3-1.
The game's next runs wouldn't come until the bottom of the sixth inning. Minnesota Duluth would push across two runs on a double and a throwing error on separate plays to tie things up at three all.
It would take extra innings to decide a victor, as both teams would trade runs in the eighth inning to make the score 4-4.
The game would go to the nineth inning. In the top half of the frame the Rangers would utilize the small ball game to move the runner to third to set up a Delgado single to score Taylor Utrada. The Rangers would hold the 5-4 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning. The Bulldogs would score two runs on a single and a walk off single to close out the game with the victory.
Game Two
Olivia Masnica would get the start in the circle for Parkside in game two. She secured her second win of the season to stay undefeated on the mound so far this season. She dealt all seven innings while striking out four batters and allowing just three earned runs. The Rangers as a team would put together a decent offensive showing, putting up six hits and five runs in the game.
The Rangers would once again come out firing in the opening inning of game two. A Rutledge single up the middle would score the first run of the game.
Mia Johnson finally knocked in her first RBI of the season on a single to right field to push the score to 2-0.
Megan Medlin added another run on a single through the right side and teammate Taylor Utrada would push across the final run of the inning to make it 4-0 in favor of the Rangers.
Parkside would tack on one more run in the second inning as Remington would lace a shot out to right field to score Delgado to make the score 5-0.
The Peacocks would answer in the top of the third by pushing across two runs of their own to cut into the Ranger lead 5-2.
In the final inning of play Upper Iowa would look to extend the game. They would drive in two runs to bring themselves within one run. With two outs and a runner in scoring position at second base, Masnica dealt the ground ball she needed and
Eden Welling recorded the final put out of the game to secure the Rangers 5-4 victory.
