Men's Soccer Faces Two Top-25 Matchups This Week

9/6/2023 9:30:00 AM

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Parkside men's soccer team enters the second week of play after two road wins in the week previous. The Rangers' play hasn't gone unnoticed as the recent coaches' poll puts the Rangers as the #6 team in the nation for Division II. They were preseason ranked #17 as the recent poll has them sliding up an astonishing 11 spots. Parkside's play has been a true team effort as 6 different players have scored this year in just two matches, highlighted by goal scoring leader Alejandro Martinez. His play was enough to receive conference honors as the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week this week.

Slated this week are two squads in the Top-25. UWP will open this week's play with their home opener against #17 UIS. Kickoff from Wood Road Field is set for 12 p.m. CDT. Your Rangers will then hit the road once again as they will travel to St. Louis to take on #10 Maryville. Kickoff from Maryville Soccer Field is set for 12 p.m. CDT as well.

SCOUTING UIS

#17 University of Illinois Springfield enters the match after knocking off #16 Saginaw Valley in a shutout 3-0 win. The Prairie Stars also matched up with another familiar GLIAC foe in Davenport, drawing with the Panthers in a 2-2 affair. UIS is led by top goal scorer Adrian Adames. Both of Adames goals came in the Davenport match and were crucial for UIS to edge out the draw. In goal for the Prairie Stars is Connor McFadden. McFadden has played all 180 minutes of the season for UIS, and while it's early in the season, McFadden already has one clean sheet to his name and a .333 save percentage.

Thursday's match will mark the 13th time the two programs have faced each other. The all-time record favors the Rangers at 7-5, but the most recent outing was a UIS win 1-2 in 2022.

SCOUTING MARYVILLE

#10 Maryville currently sits a 1-0-1, not having lost a match this season. The Saints played the same schedule as UIS, facing off against both Saginaw Valley and Davenport. They opened the season at home, hosting Davenport. The Saints looked in line to win 2-1 until they conceded the game tying goal in the 73rd minute to the Panthers. Maryville built off of the draw when facing Saginaw and topped the Cardinals in a one goal shut out. All of Maryville's goals have come from three different Saints. Nick Hemann has played all 180 minutes in goal for the Saints. With a shutout already to his name this season, Hemann hasn't been tested too often as he has only faced 10 shots with 1 save to show.

Sunday's matchup will be the 11th between the two programs. The overall record favors Parkside at 7-3, but the most recent match in 2022 was won by Maryville in a 0-2 shutout of Parkside.
