Rangers Remain Undefeated After Draw Against #23 Northern Michigan

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Parkside Rangers women's soccer team opened GLIAC play this afternoon against the Northern Michigan Wildcats. The Rangers entered the match unbeaten, while the Wildcats entered the match after recently breaking into the top-25 at #23. Both squads leave the pitch with a draw while the Rangers move to 3-0-1 on the year and the Wildcats move to 4-0-1.

Head coach Brittany Nikolic had this to share after the hard fought draw, "I'm really happy with the effort and intensity everyone on our team showed today. NMU is a tough opponent and we knew it would be a battle. We scored a great goal after conceding and never gave in. Our defending in the box was fantastic and that helped us earn a big point on the road."

Inside the Box Score
  • At 3-0-1, the Rangers remain hot with their best start to the season since 2014.
  • The Wildcats outshot the Rangers on the afternoon 25-6.
  • Of the 6 shots the Rangers took, they were able to put 4 of them on frame.
  • Mia Guyton gets her first start in goal for the season after a 6 save afternoon

HOW IT HAPPENED
The scoring got going in the 13th minute as the Wildcats were able to send a ball into the box for Hannah Kastamo to finish, giving them a one goal advantage.

Emily Mikkelson took matters into her own hands in the 16th minute. Mikkelson took possession of the ball around the midfield area and took on a plethora of Wildcats until she was one on one with the goal keeper. Mikkelson kept her cool and slotted it home to bring the Rangers back even!

The score remained the same for the final 74 minutes of the match. The Ranger defense held strong and forced the Wildcats into taking 18 shots off frame. Mia Guyton stepped up in goal and gets credited with the tie.

The Rangers will have a quick turnaround as they face Michigan Tech this Sunday, Sept 17. Kickoff from Houghton, Mich. is set for 12 p.m. EDT. Coverage for the match can be found at parksiderangers.com/coverage.
