Rangers Finish Second, Six Rangers Place at 44th Annual Midwest Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The No. 7 ranked Parkside wrestling team competed in the highly competitive 44th Annual Midwest Classic on Saturday and Sunday, facing off with some of the best Division II wrestling teams in the country. Parkside finished second out of 51 teams. The Rangers had six individuals place this weekend. Shane Corrigan, Matthew Chi, and Cayden Henschel finished in third, Reece Worachek finished fourth, and Brady Schuh and Brody Hemauer finished eighth in their respective weight classes.
 
No. 3 ranked Corrigan went 7-1 on the weekend en route to his third-place finish. He opened the weekend winning three straight, including tech fall wins by 16-0 and 15-0 scores. His lone loss of the weekend came to No. 10 ranked Quade Smith by a 4-2 decision. The sophomore rebounded, winning by three straight tech falls to reach the third-place match. There he got revenge, defeating Smith by a 13-2 major decision.
 
Chi went 7-1 this weekend, earning 3rd place in the 133-lb class. He started quickly, winning his first three matches on Saturday. His third win of the day came over No. 9 ranked James Davis by a 4-1 sudden victory. Chi's lone loss of the weekend came in the quarterfinals to No. 2 ranked Quen Campbell Chi then recovered to win four times on Sunday, including a 7-3 decision over No. 7 ranked Tommy Frezza in the third place match.
 
No. 5 ranked Henschel went 5-1 on the weekend, finishing in third place. Henschel won three straight, including a 10-4 decision to move into the championship semifinals, where he had his lone loss of the weekend to No. 1 ranked Zack Donathan by a 4-1 sudden victory. Henschel then defeated No. 2 ranked Tate Murty in the third-place match by an 8-6 decision.
 
No. 5 ranked Worachek went 5-2 on the weekend, finishing in fourth place. Worachek won four straight to open the tournament, earning himself a place in the semifinals. There he fell to Garrett Wells by a 3-2 decision. Worachek then won the consolation semifinal before coming up just short, falling in the third-place match by a 7-4 sudden victory.
 
No. 8 ranked Schuh went 4-3 on the weekend, finishing in eighth place. After winning the tournament's opening match, Schuh suffered a setback in the third round. He then fought his way back, winning three straight, including a 14-11 sudden victory over No. 11 ranked Owen Zablocki. Schuh then fell in his final two matches of the weekend, finishing in eighth place.
 
Hemauer went 5-3 on the weekend, finishing in eighth place. Hemauer won the first two matches of the weekend, by major decision and tech fall. After a loss in the third round of the championship bracket, Hemauer won three straight, including a 5-1 win over No. 5 ranked Nate Barrett to lock up a podium spot. Hemauer then fell in the final two matches of the weekend, finishing in eighth place.
 
Jalen Spuhler went 4-2 this weekend, earning nine team points. Ben Durocher went 4-2, earning five team points, Tunde Oroye went 1-2 earning a half point and Lloyd Reynolds went 3-2, earning 5.5 team points. All the points allowed Parkside to finish with 112 total points, finishing only behind No. 1 ranked Lander. The Rangers finished ahead of several top-ranked teams, including No. 3 Indianapolis, No. 4 Central Oklahoma, and No. 5 UMary.
 
 
The Rangers will return to action on Friday, January 12, when No. 5 UMary comes to De Simone Arena for an NSIC duel. The opening match is set for 7:00pm from Kenosha. Links to coverage including the live stream on the Parkside Sports Network can be found at ParksideRangers.com/coverage.
