KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Parkside Rangers men's soccer team hosted the GLIAC Semifinal this afternoon at Wood Road Soccer Field. The Rangers fell in heartbreaking fashion in a penalty kick shootout against the Cardinals.
"Hats off to Saginaw Valley State today they played a great match. It was a high quality DII soccer match today. Obviously not the result we wanted, but proud of our guys and the effort they gave today. Hopefully we will get the at-large bid for the (NCAA) Tournament and keep this thing going," remarked head coach
Jason Zitzke.
Inside the Box Score
- Centerback Mike Howell registered his first multi-goal game in his career as a Ranger.
- The Rangers out shot the Cardinals on the day 21-8.
- The Cardinals were able to convert both shots they put on goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers offensive attack got going early and stuck first on the first corner kick attempt the Rangers earned.
Mario Bolado sent a ball into the box and found captain
Mike Howell to put the Rangers ahead early in the 9th minute of play 1-0.
The Cardinals would answer just before the end of the first half in the 38th minute. The score heading into the second 45 minutes of play was all knotted up at 1-1.
The Cardinals weren't finished yet as they added the go ahead goal just four minutes into the second half. The Rangers searched for the equalizer and found it on the seventh corner kick of the afternoon. Service from
Matteo Quintero found
Edgar Heredia Victoria who played it onto
Mike Howell to put the ball into the back of the net and pull the Rangers back even at 2-2.
90 minutes wouldn't be enough to settle the contest and the match headed into overtime. Neither side was able to breakthrough in the two 10 minute halves so the match was forced to PKs.
The Rangers were the first to kick and sent
Mario Bolado to the spot. The junior converted the attempt while SVSU missed theirs. The second set of penalty takers for both sides converted and set the stage for the third round of penalty kicks. The Rangers third attempt was saved by the Cardinals goalkeeper and the Cardinal converted penalty made the shootout even once again. The next two rounds were made by both sides. The Rangers were unable to convert their sixth penalty attempt with a Saginaw Valley State save. SVSU then found the back of the net on their sixth attempt and won the shootout.
The Rangers season hangs in the balance of a possible at large bid into the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament bracket is set to be released on Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. EST.
