Softball Shuts Out Bemidji State, Falls to Missouri Western to Close Weekend in Missouri

GAME 1: Parkside 1, Bemidji State 0
GAME 2: Missouri Western State 12, Parkside 2

The Parkside softball team got a great start out of senior Kiley Akey on Sunday morning against Bemidji State, as she tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the Rangers to a win over the Beavers. In game two, Missouri Western State was too much for the Rangers in a 12-2 victory for the Griffons.

GAME 1 RECAP
Akey pitched all 7.0 innings, allowing just three hits with one walk and two strikeouts. She was able to scatter three hits, including a double in the seventh inning that she battled through. Parkside scored its lone run in the bottom of the first inning as redshirt-sophomore Taylor Delgado led off with a single and came in to score on Tia Livernash's RBI groundout.

The Rangers also finished with three hits, with Delgado going 1-for-3 with a run, freshman Rylee Baetz getting a double and junior Dani Evans going 1-for-2.

GAME 2 RECAP
The Griffons' bats were hot early, as the home team scored three runs in the first, four in the second and two in the third to go up 9-0 after three innings of play.

Baetz drove in Parkside's first run of game two on an RBI fielder's choice that scored junior Cassie Rutledge, making it 9-1. MWSU made it 12-1 in the bottom of the fourth, but Parkside added their final run with an RBI single by Livernash that scored freshman Riley Torgeson.

Three pitchers went for the Rangers, with senior Tijanne Ross suffering the loss after giving up three runs in 1.0 inning of work. Freshman Olivia Masnica threw 2.0 innings and Akey finished off the game.

Parkside will open GLIAC play with a pair of road doubleheaders this weekend, first battling Grand Valley State on March 26 at noon/2 p.m. and Davenport on March 27 at noon/2 p.m.
