Volleyball Drops Both in Day Two at Keweenaw Classic

Match 1: SW Minnesota State 3, Parkside 1
Match 2: Upper Iowa 3, Parkside 0
Day two didn't go as planned for the Parkside volleyball team, who suffered a pair of losses in day two of the Keweenaw Volleyball Classic. The Rangers are excited to return home for the Second Annual Hampton Inn Invitational next weekend.

HEAR FROM COACH BAREA
"Today was all about getting better and we did after playing two really good opponents in SMSU and Upper Iowa," second year head coach Leigh Barea said. "We made huge adjustments in our blocking and stayed aggressive offensively which gave us the ability to compete. We still have lots to improve on, but I'm really proud of the team and how they competed all weekend. Excited to get into practice this week before we open in DeSimone next weekend!"

HOW IT HAPPENED
SMSU
The Rangers tried to make a comeback against the Mustangs after SMSU took the first two sets 25-15, 25-14, but after a Parkside 25-21 win in the third set SMSU took care of business in the fourth. The Mustangs finished with 12 aces while Parkside had one. The Rangers hit .125 and SMSU finished at .263.

Upper Iowa
The first set was the seemingly the difference maker in the second match, as the Peacocks won a tight 25-23 first set, then cruised to the 3-0 win over the Rangers 25-15, 25-14 in the second and third sets. Upper Iowa had a .326 hitting percentage while the Rangers finished with a .178.

WHO LED THE WAY
Same as yesterday, Rachel Hedman led the team in kills in both games, going for 12 in the first match and 14 in the second. Emma Habisch led the team in assists in the opener, followed by Alysha Brickl leading the way in the second. Ann Leo had a team-high 31 digs in both matches combined. Freshman Lexi Packard had a team-high 5.0 blocks.

SECOND ANNUAL HAMPTON INN INVITATIONAL
The Rangers will host the Second Annual Hampton Inn Invitational next weekend, first battling Quincy on Friday, Sept. 13 at 10:15 a.m. in the team's home opener. Parkside will face Upper Iowa Friday at 7:15 p.m., Winona State Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and McKendree Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
