Volleyball Wins GLIAC Opener 3-2 Over Wayne State

Parkside 3, Wayne State 2
Parkside Volleyball's GLIAC opener wasn't going to plan when the Rangers dropped the first two sets and were down big in the third against Wayne State. The team battled back and found a way to win three straight sets to take home the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers dropped the first two sets of the night, with the scores being 20-25 and 17-25. The third set didn't look great either when they found themselves down 20-10. That's when a service ace by freshman Lexi Packard sparked a 12-2 Parkside run, putting the team in position to grab their first set win of the night. The Rangers used that momentum and jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the fourth set, which proved to be enough to eventually win the set 25-22. The fifth and final set was a decisive 15-8 win for Parkside, completing the comeback and first GLIAC win of the season.

HEAR FROM COACH BAREA
"I can't put into words how proud I am of their grit and fight after being down in the third set to battle back and win in five," said head coach Leigh Barea. "So many people stepped up and made huge plays during all parts of the match."

"What a win for this team," Barea added. "I couldn't think of a better way to start conference play."

STATWORTHY
Sophomore Jazmine Neal led Parkside with 15 kills, while junior Rachel Hedman had 14. Freshman Alysha Brickl led the team in assists with 26. Senior Ann Leo had 23 digs on the night, leaving her just 29 digs away from being Parkside's all-time digs leader.

WHAT'S NEXT
Parkside is right back at it tomorrow, September 21 when they take on Ashland at 1 p.m. After leaving Ohio, the Rangers will return home to take on Purdue Northwest on Tuesday, September 24 at 7 p.m.
