PARKSIDE 66, FERRIS STATE 59
Parkside men's basketball held off the reigning national champions to win their 10th straight home game and improve to 12-7 in GLIAC Saturday afternoon at DeSimone Gymnasium on Senior Day. The Rangers are now tied with the Bulldogs in the standings and have clinched a home game to open the GLIAC Tournament, which will be played on Tuesday, March 5.
This makes back-to-back games that the Rangers have held their opponent to less than 60 points after the win Thursday night over Lake Superior State. Ferris State came in to DeSimone Gymnasium as the highest scoring team in the GLIAC and No. 20 in the nation at 87 points per game.
HEAR FROM COACH REIGEL
"We did it with defense today, our defense this whole home stand was phenomenal," head coach
Luke Reigel said. "We competed and played hard and we just did such a great job defensively where anything they scored was difficult."
"Every game has been so tight the last few weeks and our kids just stay poised. We put different guys on the floor and they keep stepping up. What I'm really happy with is that we outrebounded Ferris State, which doesn't happen very often. I'm proud of how hard we competed and proud of defeating an outstanding team."
HOW IT STARTED
Ferris State opened up hot, on a 7-0 run to start the game. The Rangers battled back and grabbed their first lead on
Jonathan Morrobel's second of four 3-pointers of the first half at the 11:44 mark. Morrobel hit another jumper just under a minute to play, giving Parkside a 26-24 lead at the half.
In the second half, the teams traded the lead throughout the first 10:00, until Parkside grabbed the lead with 8:54 to play on an
Adam Bonk 3-pointer and didn't look back.
HOW IT ENDED
After Bonk's triple, the Green & White never trailed again, but Ferris State kept it close, as they brought the gap to just one point with 3:04 to play. After that, Parkside ended the game on a 7-2 run, including a
Chavares Flanigan fast break dunk to put the exclamation point on the win with :13-seconds left.
STATWORTHY
Morrobel led the team with 14 points with four 3-pointers, all of which came in the first half. Flanigan finished with 12 points and Bonk had 11 while
Brandon Hau had nine points and seven rebounds.
Joey St. Pierre had four blocks and five rebounds.
Parkside outrebounded Ferris State 41-36 and went +2 in turnovers.
