PARKSIDE 76, DAVENPORT 70
Parkside played spoiler Saturday afternoon as they beat the Panthers 76-70, and gave them their first loss of the season. The Rangers' win is their first-ever in the GLIAC as Parkside officially joined the conference in July of 2018. The Rangers were led by Redshirt Freshman
Brandon Trimble, who registered a career-high 19 points including 10 points in the final 6-minutes alone.
FIRST HALF
The two teams traded blows for the first ten minutes of the half, as they found themselves tied at 18-18. A stint of suffocating defense from both sides kept the score that way for the next 3-minutes. Over the final 7-minutes of the half, the Rangers shot 46% from the field as they outscored the Panthers 14-10. Despite shooting 16% from 3-point range, Parkside's defense allowed them to lead at the half 32-28.
SECOND HALF
The teams opened the half battling for the lead, as Davenport sparked a run of their own. It took 6-minutes for the teams to find themselves tied again, this time at 40-40. With 10:50 left in the game, a made layup from redshirt freshman
Brandon Hau sparked a 7-0 run that gave the Rangers a 54-47 lead with 8:26 to play. Davenport quickly responded with two quick baskets to cut the lead to three. The Parkside lead increased as a Trimble layup made the score 60-53 with 5:38 to play. In the final 5-minutes of the game, redshirt-freshmen Trimble and Hau combined to score 15 of the team's final 16 points, giving the Rangers a 76-70 win.
HEAR FROM COACH REIGEL
"We've played a lot of close games recently, all of those games we were right in there with 8 to 10 minutes to play but today we stepped up and got the stops we needed and the plays we needed," said head coach
Luke Reigel. "The only way we are going to be successful is to get contributions from up and down the lineup, and we got that today."
"I don't think our guys lost confidence but until you get a win under your belt in league play, you start to doubt things a little bit," Reigel added. "So hopefully this takes the pressure off, but we know it's a long season. We want to get both wins at home, but to get a split against these two teams (Grand Valley State, Davenport) makes us feel pretty good."
A LOOK AT THE STATS
Trimble registered a team-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while going a perfect 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. Three other Rangers finished the game in double-figures as Hau finished with a career-high 14 points, while the duo of
Chavares Flanigan and
Joey St. Pierre each contributed 10. Flanigan also collected seven rebounds.
Flanigan was key on the defensive end, as he held Davenport's leading scorer Avery Hudson, to six points on 2-of-11 shooting from the field.
