SOMERS, Wis. -- The Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball team will open the 2017 Deaconess Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Thursday (March 2) against Indianapolis in the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
The Rangers enter the tournament as the fourth seed and will face the fifth-seeded Greyhounds in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Wisconsin-Parkside earned a bye in the opening round of the tournament, while Indianapolis defeated Missouri-St. Louis 76-63 on Sunday.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which enters the tournament with a 21-6 overall record, swept the season series against Indianapolis. The Rangers edged the Greyhounds 63-61 on Dec. 1 in DeSimone Gymnasium and then topped Indianapolis 92-84 on Feb. 18 in Indianapolis.
In the first game between the two teams, senior
Alexander Brown scored 21 points and Wisconsin-Parkside used a 17-4 run in the second half to defeat the Greyhounds. In the Rangers victory at Indianapolis, junior
Kendale McCullum led the Rangers by posting a double-double with 20 points and 11 assists.
Brown leads the Rangers averaging 17.3 points per game, while McCullum is second on the team averaging 15.3 points per contest. Both Brown and McCullum were named to the Great Lakes Valley All-Conference First Team announced on Wednesday.
Senior
Jake Verhagen also averages in double figures for the Rangers averaging 10.6 points per game. Junior
Goran Zagorac, who was named to the GLVC All-Defensive Team, leads the Rangers averaging 6.1 rebounds per game while also shooting a team-leading 62.6 percent from the floor.
McCullum, who was also named to the All-Defensive Team, leads the conference averaging 2.4 steals per game and is ranked second in the GLVC averaging 6.0 assists per contest. Brown ranks fifth in the conference in scoring and is 13th in field goal percentage.
Wisconsin-Parkside is eighth in the latest NCAA Regional rankings and a deep tournament run would help to solidify the Rangers NCAA Tournament hopes. Wisconsin-Parkside has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each of the last four years and also advanced to the GLVC Tournament title game last season.
Indianapolis, which improved to 16-11 on the season with its win over Missouri-St. Louis, features seven players averaging in double figures led by Eric Davidson who averages 15.2 points per game.
