ROMEOVILLE, Ill. --
Chavares Flanigan scored the go-ahead layup with 1:09 to play and then added four free throws in the final 20 seconds as Wisconsin-Parkside notched its 15th-straight victory with a 71-66 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Lewis on Monday in Neil Carey Arena.
Miles Simelton put Lewis ahead 66-65 with a pair of free throws with 1:23 to play in the game before Flanigan took over.
He put the Rangers ahead to stay at 67-66 with a layup at the 1:09 mark of the second half. After a Lewis miss on its next trip, Flanigan came up with a big offensive rebound on a Rangers missed layup and was fouled with 19 seconds to play, and made both attempts to extend the Wisconsin-Parkside lead to 69-66.
Flanigan then came up with a defensive rebound off a potential game-tying three-point attempt by the Flyers and was fouled. He then iced the game for the Rangers by knocking down both free throws to increase the lead to 71-66 with six seconds to play.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which improved to 15-1 overall and 7-0 in the GLVC, moved into sole possession of first place in the GLVC East Division with the win. The Rangers, Lewis and Southern Indiana were all tied with 6-0 records in conference play heading into tonight's game, but UWP downed Lewis and Bellarmine topped Southern Indiana.
The Rangers also extended their winning streak to 15 straight games and will attempt to tie the school record for the longest winning streak in program history when it faces Southern Indiana on Thursday (Jan. 19).
Flanigan finished with 14 points and nine rebounds for the Rangers, while
Alexander Brown led Wisconsin-Parkside with 19 points. Junior
Kendale McCullum added 16 points, seven assists, five rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals.
Lewis, which dropped to 11-6 overall and 6-1 in conference play, was led by Cristen Wilson who had 13 points. Frank Vukaj added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Flyers.
