EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- In a game befitting two top-25 ranked teams, ninth-ranked Southern Indiana held off 22nd-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside 76-72 ending the Rangers 15-game winning streak in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game on Thursday in the Physical Activities Center.
Southern Indiana, which improved to 17-1 overall and 7-1 in conference play, never led by more than four points during the final nine minutes of the second half. Wisconsin-Parkside trimmed the Screaming Eagles lead to one point on six different occasions in the final nine minutes, but could never take the lead.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which fell to 15-2 overall and 7-1 in the GLVC, saw its winning streak snapped one game shy of tying the school record for the longest winning streak in program history.
Southern Indiana took a 72-68 lead on a three-point play by Jacob Norman with 2:25 to play in the second half, butÂ
Chavares Flanigan cut the lead to 72-70 on a layup with 2:12 remaining in the game.
Jeril Taylor made one of two free throws with 1:50 to play to increase the lead to 73-70.
Kendale McCullum was fouled driving to the basket and made a pair of free throws with 20.3 seconds to play to bring the Rangers to within 73-72.
Wisconsin-Parkside intentionally fouled Alex Stein with 17 seconds remaining and Stein knocked down both free throws to increase the lead to 75-72.
On the Rangers next possession, Southern Indiana blocked a shot attempt and the Screaming Eagles regained the ball when it went out of bounds of a UW-Parkside player.
Taylor then sealed the victory for Southern Indiana by making one of two free throw attempts with 6.8 seconds to play.
McCullum led five players in double figures with 20 points. The junior also had eight assists, four rebounds and two steals to lead the Rangers.
Alexander Brown finished with 15 points, while
Kyle Flanagan added 12 points.
Goran Zagorac had 11 points and nine rebounds, while
Jake Verhagen finished with 10 points.
Southern Indiana, which outscored the Rangers 21-7 from the free throw line, was led by Taylor who finished with 25 points. Stein added 23 points and Norman had 11 points.
The Rangers took their largest lead of the game at 12-9 on a layup by McCullum with 12:12 to play in the first half.
The Screaming Eagles used an 8-1 run midway through the first half to take a 25-15 lead with 7:56 to play in the opening period.
Southern Indiana stretched the lead to 41-26 on a layup by Stein and took a 41-30 lead into the intermission.
Taylor opened the second half with a jumper to push the lead to 43-30, but Wisconsin-Parkside reeled off a 13-2 run to climb back into the game.
Verhagen began the run with a three-pointer and Brown followed with a free throw and a layup to cut the lead to 43-36 with 18:48 to play in the second half.
Back-to-back layups by Zagorac and McCullum got Wisconsin-Parkside to within 43-40 before Taylor scored inside to push the lead to 45-40 with 16:18 left in the game.
Flanagan then drilled a three-pointer cutting the lead to 45-43 at the 15:45 mark of the second and the remainder of the game was tightly contested.
Wisconsin-Parkside will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 21) when it faces Bellarmine at 2 p.m.
