SOMERS, Wis. --
Kendale McCullum scored a game-high 22 points and
Kyle Flanagan added 19 points and 11 rebounds and Wisconsin-Parkside held off a furious rally by Maryville as the Rangers extended their winning streak to 13 straight games with an 83-78 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Saints on Thursday in DeSimone Gymnasium.
Flanagan made two free throws with 8.6 seconds remaining in regulation upping the Wisconsin-Parkside lead to 82-78 and
Goran Zagorac blocked a layup attempt with 2.1 seconds remaining to seal the victory for the Rangers.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which improved to 13-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play, looked to make short work of the Saints in the first half.
Already leading 26-17, the Rangers reeled off a 13-0 run to take a 39-17 lead with 8:03 to play in the first period.
Jake Verhagen, who finished with 16 points, helped fuel the run with back-to-back three-pointers and Flanagan capped the run with a layup.
Following a Maryville timeout, the Saints closed the first half on a 14-6 run to cut the Rangers lead to 45-31 at the intermission.
After Forrester Sims opened the second half with a jumper to bring the Saints to within 45-33, McCullum converted a three-point play and Zagorac scored inside to up the lead to 50-33 with 18:38 remaining in the game.
Maryville, which dropped to 7-11 overall and 1-5 in league play, climbed to within 57-50 on a three-pointer by Jeff Leeson with 12:27 remaining in the game.
The Rangers responded with a layup by Flanagan and a layup by
Alexander Brown to push the lead to 61-50 at the 11:31 mark of the second period.
Wisconsin-Parkside stretched the lead back to 73-58 on a three-pointer by McCullum with 7:52 to play in the game, but the Saints would rally.
The Rangers led 77-67 following a layup by Brown with 3:12 to play in the game, but Maryville reeled off an 11-3 run to climb to within 80-78 with 43 seconds remaining in the game.
Flanagan then made two free throws to help seal the victory for the Rangers.
McCullum was 6-of-13 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free throw line and also added seven assists and two steals.
Forrester Sims and Anthony Johnson led Maryville with 16 points, while Grant Sims added 15 points.
Wisconsin-Parkside returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 14) when it hosts Missouri-St. Louis in a GLVC contest at 3 p.m.
