ROLLA, Mo. -- Freshmen
Leah Fenske and
Kasey Davis each recorded 15 kills and Wisconsin-Parkside recorded its first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season with a 22-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21 victory over Missouri S&T on Saturday at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
Fenske narrowly missed a triple-double as she finished with 15 kills, 12 digs and nine blocks. Davis fell one dig shy of a double-double as she had 15 kills and nine digs.
Rebecca Roembke and
Lauren Hickson also posted double-doubles for the Rangers. Roembke had 11 kills and 12 digs, while Hickson had 44 assists and 10 digs.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which improved to 2-9 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC, posted season highs in attack percentage and blocks. The Rangers hit a season-best .278 and also recorded a season-high 15 blocks. In addition to the nine blocks recorded by Fenske, the Rangers received seven blocks from
Elizabeth Mavis and
Lexi Turek.
After posting a .244 attack percentage in the opening set, the Rangers rebounded to hit a combined .291 in the next three sets.
Missouri S&T, which dropped to 3-7 on the season and 1-1 in conference play, was led by Claire Friedlund who had 15 kills and 10 digs.
The Miners broke a 20-20 tie in the first set with a 3-0 run, which included a pair of UWP attack errors, to take a 23-20 lead. Missouri S&T clinched the set on a kill by Caroline Dykes.
The Rangers used a 7-2 run midway through the second set to take control. Fenske had three kills and Davis added a kill, which gave the Rangers a 16-11 lead in the second set.
Missouri S&T cut the lead to 20-18, but following a UWP timeout, Hickson ripped a kill to regain momentum for the Rangers. Two Missouri S&T attack errors and a kill by Fenske ended the second set with the Rangers on top 25-19.
The Rangers took control of the match with a dramatic comeback win in the third set. After a UWP attack error, the Rangers found themselves trailing 20-13 but staged a furious rally to win the set.
Turek and Mavis began the comeback with back-to-back kills to bring UW-Parkside to within 20-15. A kill by Roembke trimmed the lead to 21-16, but Dykes answered for the Miners to up the lead to 22-16.
Roembke and Mavis posted back-to-back kills for the Rangers to cut the lead to 22-18, but Dykes once again responded to up the margin to 23-18.
Roembke recorded a kill to jump start a 6-0 Rangers run that resulted in a 25-23 victory. A service ace by
Annie Leo and a kill by Davis capped the run for UWP.
The fourth set was tied 18-18 before the Rangers took advantage of a pair of Missouri S&T attack errors to take a 20-18 lead.
A Fenske kill and another Miner attack error increased the UWP lead to 22-19.
Davis upped the Rangers lead to 23-20 with a kill and the Miners followed with an attack error pushing the margin to 24-20.
Carson Talley posted a kill trimming the lead to 24-21, but Davis wrapped up the set and the match with a kill for the Rangers.
Wisconsin-Parkside returns to De Simone Gymnasium on Friday (Sept. 23) when it hosts Maryville in a GLVC match beginning at 7 p.m.
