UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. (Apr. 19, 2016)-- It was an agonizing Tuesday for the University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball team, falling victim to a pair of walkoff hits as host Saginaw Valley State University came away with wins in both ends of the non-conference doubleheader. The Rangers fell 3-1 in an eight inning affair in the opener before suffering a 3-2 setback in the nightcap.
Â
The Rangers (8-37) fell victim to a walkoff home run in extra innings in the opener with Saginaw Valley State's Bethaney Murphey blasting a two-run shot with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning for the 3-1 win.
Â
The Cardinals (26-12) plated the contest's first run in the first inning on a double while the Rangers leveled the score in the fourth at 1-1.
Rachel Seefeldt led off the frame with a double down the line before scoring on a SVSU fielding miscue.
Â
Seefeldt led the Rangers at the plate, finishing with two of the quad's four hits in the game.
Â
Carly Dundee was hit with the loss inside the circle, striking out two and allowing three earned runs in 7 2/3 innings of action while SVSU's Anna Conard tallied five punchouts to capture the complete game win.
Â
UW-Parkside wasted little time getting on the board in game two with a
Caressa DeRossett double down the right field line scoring
Sara Markelonis for the early 1-0 edge in the top of the first. SVSU battled back in the fourth inning, pushing across a run on a triple before seizing the lead with another run in the sixth.
Â
The Rangers matched the Cardinals with another run in the seventh with a Markelonis single up the middle plating
Cassie Walek, tying the game at 2-2 but SVSU ended up having the last punch, loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh before Madison Burgess hit a single up the middle to bring in the decisive score.
Â
Markelonis highlighted game two offensively, finishing a perfect three-for-three while
Morgan Sikon added a pair of base hits.
Â
Dundee absorbed the loss, pitching the final 2 1/3 innings in relief of
Amber Ramos who tallied four strikeouts in four innings of work. SVSU's Annie Hansen earned the complete game win, allowing two earned runs and striking out four.
Â
UW-Parkside is back on the diamond on Saturday, facing Drury University in a Great Lakes Valley Conference showdown in Springfield, Missouri.
