SOMERS, Wis. (Apr. 16, 2016)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team had its Oberbruner Field opener spoiled at the hands of 19th-ranked University of Indianapolis on Saturday, suffering 11-4 and 11-1 setbacks to the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division rival.

The host Rangers (5-24, 1-13 GLVC) outhit the nationally-ranked Greyhounds (24-9, 10-4 GLVC) in the opener but was unable to bring baserunners across home plate, stranding 12 on base over the course of the nine inning contest.

Indianapolis poured on eight runs in the opening inning and seized a 11-0 edge after four innings of play.

UW-Parkside broke up the shutout in the bottom of the eighth inning with
Kyle Schulz belting a single to center field to score
Juan Bowers. The Rangers added three more in the ninth, including two on a
Nick Sramek triple but was unable to inflict any more damage in the seven-run setback.

Parkside owned a 13-8 edge in hits with
Zach Thompson and
Kyohei Makita both collecting three hits while
Troy Bittenbender was two-for-four.

John Dokolas suffered the loss on the mound while
Riley Phillips had a strong outing out of the bullpen, pitching the final six innings and striking out eight while allowing just one run and three hits. UIndy's Matthew Kapalanis netted the win, fanning 10 in six innings of work.

The Rangers jumped to an early lead in game two but was unable to maintain the edge, yielding six runs in a two-inning window in the 11-1 setback.

Jake Kolasinski drew a walk to open the second inning and later scored with two outs on a Greyhound throwing error. UW-Parkside's lead proved fleeting with UIndy scoring three runs in the top of the third and three more in the fourth. Indianapolis padded its lead with five more in the sixth to close the scoreline.

Mario Samuel was hit with the loss, pitching the opening 5 2/3 innings and striking out three. UIndy's Jake Shaw netted the win, striking out three in six innings of labor.

The two squads finish off the series on Sunday with another doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
