(Mar. 26, 2016)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball squad was unable to crawl out of early deficits in both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference twinbill on Saturday, falling 3-1 and 9-6 to nemesis Lewis University at Brennan Field.
Â
In the opener, the Flyers' Dalton Hottle tossed a complete game one-hitter as Lewis emerged with the 3-1 win. Lewis (14-5, 4-0 GLVC) tallied single runs in both the first and second innings while the Rangers (3-15, 0-4 GLVC) plated its lone run in the sixth inning with
Andrew Luscomb scoring on a wild pitch.
Â
Josh Serio was hit with the loss on the mound, striking out six and allowing just four hits and one earned run in the complete game effort. LU's Hottle tossed the one-hitter, allowing no earned runs while fanning six.
Â
In game two, the host Flyers struck early, putting up a pair of runs in each of the first two frames to seize an early 4-0 lead. UW-Parkside got on the board in the top of the third with a
Zach Thompson single to center field scoring
Kyohei Makita and
Bobby Neylon. Lewis countered with five runs in the bottom of the inning, securing a 9-2 lead.
Â
A Neylon groundout plated
Lovell Chandler in the fourth while
Nick Sramek belted a two-run home run in the fifth to close the gap to just four runs. A
DJ Peltz groundout brought in Makita in the sixth to close within three. In the ninth, the Rangers had the tying run on deck with no outs after
Jake Kolasinski drew a leadoff walk but the visitors were unable to capitalize as two groundouts and a strikeout gave the Flyers' the win and the series sweep.
Â
Makita and Thompson paced Parkside's offensive efforts, both finishing two-for-five at the plate.
Â
Tyler Jandron took the loss on the hill, striking out nine in the complete game effort while LU's Jake Herron earned the win, striking out three in five innings of action while Sam Couch netted the save, handling the final three innings and striking out four.
