SOMERS, Wis. -- Senior
Brittney Fair scored 16 points, but a furious Wisconsin-Parkside rally fell short as Saint Joseph's defeated the Rangers 63-61 on Saturday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game in DeSimone Gymnasium.
Saint Joseph's, which improved to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC, took a 61-49 lead with 5:32 to play when Lauren Ruth drained a three-pointer.
The Rangers rallied back into the game on the strength of a 9-0 run.
Fair made four consecutive free throws and
Lauren Boerger also made a pair to cut the Pumas lead to 61-56 with 2:49 left in the game.
Blair Arthur converted a driving layup that sliced the lead to 61-58 with 2:24 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Kalea Parks, who finished with a game-high 27 points, connected on a jumper to increase the lead to 63-58 with 1:06 remaining in the game.
Fair drilled a three-pointer with 41 seconds left that brought the Rangers to within 63-61.
Boerger blocked a jumper by Parks and the Rangers regained possession following a turnover with 10 seconds left to play, but Wisconsin-Parkside was unable to get a shot off in the final 10 seconds and the Pumas escaped with the victory.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which fell to 0-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play, also received nine points from
Olivia Montague and six points each from Arthur, Boerger and
Asiah Lawson.
Shelby Cheston added five points and seven rebounds for the Rangers.
Saint Joseph's, which shot 48.1 percent from the floor for the game, also received 16 points from Ruth and 10 points and five rebounds from Lauren Kotey.
Wisconsin-Parkside used the three-pointer to take an early lead against the Pumas.
Montague, Haley Maystead and Lawson all connected from beyond the arc, which helped give the Rangers an 11-4 lead in the first quarter.
After a free throw by Rolanda Curington trimmed the lead to 11-5, Lawson connected on another three-pointer to up the lead to 14-5 with 1:53 left in the first quarter.
A basket by Parks to close the first quarter and another to open the second quarter brought the Pumas to within 14-9 with 9:27 to play before halftime.
The Rangers took their largest lead of the game after a basket by Cheston and a three-pointer by Montague gave UWP a 19-9 lead with 8:29 to play in the second quarter.
The Pumas used an 11-2 run to tie the game at 23-23 with 1:12 remaining before halftime, but layups by Boerger and Maystead gave Wisconsin-Parkside a 27-23 lead at halftime.
Saint Joseph's shot 55.6 percent from the field in the third quarter and built as much as a 12-point lead as the Pumas outscored the Rangers 27-13 in the period.
Wisconsin-Parkside returns to action on Thursday (Dec. 8) when it hosts Trinity Christian in a non-conference game at 6 p.m.
