Cheston Paces Rangers to Victory over Indiana Northwest

SOMERS, Wis. -- Junior Shelby Cheston scored a season-high 14 points and collected a season-high nine rebounds leading Wisconsin-Parkside to a 74-33 victory over Indiana Northwest in a non-conference game on Monday in DeSimone Gymnasium.

The Rangers, who notched their second win in the last three games, allowed the fewest points in a game since holding Trinity International to 32 points on Nov. 22, 2013.

Cheston was 7-of-9 from the floor and also added two blocked shots and an assist. Blair Arthur was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field, which including making all three of her three-point attempts, to finish with 11 points and Lauren Boerger finished with 10 points.

Wisconsin-Parkside, which improved to 2-8 on the season, also received nine points each from Hayley Maystead and Brittney Fair, while Clarisa Martinez had four points, seven rebounds and two assists.

The Rangers dished out a season-high 25 assists led by Taylor Stephen who had five. Arthur added four assists and Olivia Montague, Fair, Asiah Lawson, Kauri Jensen and Martinez each had two assists.

Indiana Northwest, which entered the game ranked 13th in the NAIA Top 25 poll, was led by Weslee Wilson who scored seven points. Nicki Monahan and Gina Rubino each finished with five points for the RedHawks.

Wisconsin-Parkside, which never trailed in the game, used a 12-2 run in the first quarter to take early control of the game.

Jensen started the run with a three-point play and Arthur followed with a three-pointer giving the Rangers a 13-6 lead with 3:05 left in the first quarter.

Following a layup by Rubino, Boerger and Lawson connected on three-pointers increasing the Rangers lead to 19-8 at the 2:17 mark of the first quarter.

Four consecutive free throws by the RedHawks trimmed the lead to 19-12, but Boerger connected on a jumper giving UWP a 21-12 lead after the first quarter of play.

The Rangers then blew the game open by outscoring Indiana Northwest 24-5 in the second quarter. Wisconsin-Parkside shot 47.6 percent from the floor in the second quarter, while limiting Indiana Northwest to just 20.0 percent shooting.

Wisconsin-Parkside opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run, which included a three-pointer from Fair, to extend the lead to 30-14 with 7:08 to play in the second quarter.

Following a layup by Bernadette Grabowski, the Rangers closed the second quarter on a 15-1 run.

Montague opened the run with a three-pointer and baskets by Martinez and Arthur and a free throw by Boerger gave the Rangers a 38-16 lead with 4:50 to play before halftime.

Arthur drilled a three-pointer and Carolina Rahkonen converted a layup pushing the Wisconsin-Parkside lead to 43-16 with 2:22 remaining in the quarter.

Monahan made a free throw with 1:18 to play to end the run, but Boerger connected a jumper giving UWP a 45-17 lead at the intermission.

The Rangers never led by less than 30 points after Fair connected on a three-pointer with 5:00 to play in the third quarter. Wisconsin-Parkside took its largest lead of the game at 74-31 when Georgie Eishold hit a three-pointer with 1:20 to play in the game.

Wisconsin-Parkside will return to action on Dec. 31 when it hosts Grand Valley State in a non-conference game at 1 p.m. in DeSimone Gymnasium.
