Rangers Close Out Non-Conference Slate with Loss to Grand Valley State

SOMERS, Wis. -- Senior Brittney Fair scored a game-high 14 points and collected eight rebounds, but Wisconsin-Parkside dropped its final non-conference game of the season to 21st-ranked Grand Valley State 82-53 on Saturday in DeSimone Gymnasium.

Grand Valley State, which improved to 9-3 on the season, used a 15-4 run to end the second quarter to pull away from the Rangers.

After trailing by as many as 13 points in the first quarter, the Rangers fought their way back into the game. Trailing 15-2 with 2:54 to play in the opening quarter, Wisconsin-Parkside closed the quarter on a 7-1 run to climb to within 16-9 after one quarter of play.

Hayley Maystead began the run with a jumper and Clarisa Martinez followed with a layup and Blair Arthur capped the outburst with a three-pointer that trimmed the Laker lead to 15-9 with 16 seconds to play in the first quarter. Kayla Dawson made one of two free throws with four seconds remaining in the quarter to up the lead to 16-9.

The Lakers held a 22-13 lead with 7:13 to play before halftime, but the Rangers responded. Kauri Jensen made one of two free throws and Asiah Lawson drilled a three-pointer to trim the margin to 22-17 with 6:27 to play before halftime. Following a Grand Valley State turnover, Lauren Boerger converted a layup that brought Wisconsin-Parkside to within 22-19 with 5:31 to play in the second quarter.

Cassidy Boensch scored four points during an 8-0 run that upped the Laker lead to 30-19 at the 2:57 mark of the second quarter. Maystead countered with a layup for the Rangers, but the Lakers then reeled off a 7-0 run to increase the lead to 37-21 with 53 seconds to play in the second quarter.

Fair drained a short jumper with 40 seconds remaining in the second quarter to cut the Grand Valley State lead to 37-23 at the intermission.

After a layup by Shelby Cheston got Wisconsin-Parkside to within 41-25 with 8:38 to play in the third quarter the Lakers put together an 8-0 run to seize control of the game. Boensch scored four points during the run, which gave the Lakers a 49-25 lead with 4:01 to play in the third quarter.

The Rangers rallied to get the lead under 20 points with 4:55 to play in the fourth quarter, but the Lakers closed the game on a 14-4 run.

Wisconsin-Parkside, which dropped to 2-9 on the season, also received eight points each from Boerger and Maystead. Taylor Stephen added six points and six rebounds for Wisconsin-Parkside.

Grand Valley State shot 48.3 percent from the floor, while Wisconsin-Parkside was limited to 30.0 percent shooting. The Lakers were led by Jenn DeBoer who had 11 points and six rebounds, while Taylor Lutz finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

Wisconsin-Parkside returns to action on Jan. 5 when it visits Drury for a Great Lakes Valley Conference game beginning at 5:30 p.m.
