ROMEOVILLE, Ill. --
Shelby Cheston and
Asiah Lawson each scored 12 points, but Lewis used a 16-0 run midway through the third quarter to rally past Wisconsin-Parkside 74-62 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game in Neil Carey Arena on Sunday.
A jumper by
Brittney Fair gave Wisconsin-Parkside a 39-34 lead with 7:28 to play in the third quarter before the Flyers rallied behind the play of Jamie Johnson and Jessica Keliher who combined to score 56 points.
Johnson and Keliher scored 13 of the 16 points during the run, which gave Lewis a 50-39 lead with 1:50 remaining in the third quarter.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which dropped to 1-8 on the season and 0-3 in GLVC play, would mount a rally of its own in the fourth quarter.
The Flyers led by 56-46 with 7:08 to play in the fourth quarter following a layup by Keliher, but the Rangers responded with a 7-0 run to climb back into the game.
Cheston scored inside and then hit a jumper, and
Hayley Maystead added a layup to cut the Lewis lead to 56-52 with 5:50 remaining in the game.
Following a Lewis timeout, Maystead made one of two free throws to cut the lead to 56-53 with 4:49 left in the contest.
Keliher made two free throws with 2:44 remaining to push the Lewis lead to 62-57, but Lawson drained a three-pointer to bring the Rangers to within 62-60 with 2:29 to play in the game.
Lewis, which improved to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play, made eight consecutive free throws down the stretch and closed the game on a 12-2 run to seal the victory.
Cheston also added a team-high seven rebounds and blocked two shots for the Rangers, while Lawson was 4-of-8 from the three-point line.
Olivia Montague finished with nine points, while Fair and Maystead each added eight points for Wisconsin-Parkside.
Keliher had 31 points and 11 rebounds to lead Lewis, while Johnson finished with 25 points which included a perfect 13-of-13 performance from the free throw line.
Lewis shot 47.2 percent from the floor, including 54.5 percent in the third quarter, and limited Wisconsin-Parkside to 31.8 percent shooting. The Flyers dominated the interior as they outscored the Rangers 40-16 in the paint.
Wisconsin-Parkside returns to action on Dec. 19 when it hosts Indiana Northwest at 5 p.m. in DeSimone Gymnasium.
