SOMERS, Wis. -- Senior
Alexander Brown scored 21 points and keyed a late second-half run that helped propel Wisconsin-Parkside to a 63-61 victory over Indianapolis in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both schools on Thursday in DeSimone Gymnasium.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which ran its winning streak to five straight, improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Indianapolis dropped to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the GLVC with the loss.
With the Rangers trailing 51-44, Brown poured in nine points during a 17-4 Wisconsin-Parkside run that gave UWP a 61-55 lead with 4:27 remaining in the second half.
Jake Verhagen started the run with a dunk and
Goran Zagorac followed with a layup that brought the Rangers to within 51-48 with 10:04 to play in the game.
Following a layup by D.J. Davis, Brown drained a three-pointer to cut the Greyhounds lead to 53-51 at the 9:10 mark of the second.
Milos Cabarkapa upped the Indianapolis lead to 55-51 with a layup, but Brown responded with another three-pointer to trim the lead to 55-54 at the 8:11 mark.
Verhagen made a pair of free throws with 7:48 remaining to put Wisconsin-Parkside ahead for good at 56-55.
Brown then scored inside and then converted a three-point play to cap the run giving the Rangers a 61-55 lead with 4:27 remaining in the game.
A three-point play by Davis brought the Greyhounds to within 63-61 with 1:20 left to play, and Indianapolis had several good looks at a go-ahead three-pointer but Zagorac eventually grabbed a rebound for the Rangers with 2.6 seconds to play.
Zagorac missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw opportunity, but the Greyhounds length of the court pass was batted away by Brown to seal the victory.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which trailed 41-38 at the intermission, limited the Greyhounds to just 30.0 percent shooting from the floor in the second half after Indianapolis shot 58.6 percent in the first half.
Brown was 7-of-13 from the floor and made 4-of-6 three-point attempts to lead the Rangers in scoring. Verhagen finished with 12 points and six rebounds, while
Kendale McCullum and Zagorac each finished with 10 points.
Indianapolis was led by Davis who scored 15 points, while Jimmy King and Jesse Kempson each finished with 10 points.
