SOMERS, Wis. --Â
Rebecca Roembke had a double-double with 13 kills and 21 digs and
Kasey Davis had 16 kills, but a furious Wisconsin-Parkside rally fell short as the Rangers dropped a 25-23, 25-16, 22-25, 18-25, 18-16 Great Lakes Valley Conference match to Quincy on Friday in DeSimone Gymnasium.
After the Rangers dropped the first two sets, they regrouped to win sets three and four to set up a decisive fifth set. Wisconsin-Parkside had two match points in the fifth set, but Quincy rallied to win the deciding set 18-16.
Three Wisconsin-Parkside players reached double figures in kills led by Davis who had 16. Roembke and
Lexi Turek each added 13 kills for Wisconsin-Parkside. Roembke,
Lauren Hickson and
Katie Adams all posted double-doubles for the Rangers as Roembke had 13 kills and 21 digs, Hickson recorded 10 digs and 36 assists and Adams added 18 assists and 11 digs.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which dropped to 12-15 overall and 8-6 in the GLVC, also received a match-high 32 digs from freshman
Annie Leo. Turek led the Ranger blocking efforts as she had eight blocks, while Adams added five blocks.
Quincy, which raised its record to 16-10 on the season and 10-4 in conference play, was led by Bekah Raebel who had 16 kills. Emily Lindemulder had 13 kills, Bobbie Eastman recorded 12 kills and Jessica Licurgo notched 10 kills for the Hawks.
Wisconsin-Parkside began its comeback in earnest in the third set. The Rangers broke a 7-7 deadlock with a 12-2 run that gave UWP a 19-9 lead. Two kills by
Elizabeth Mavis and a kill from Roembke and Davis fueled the UW-Parkside run, which was also aided by seven Quincy hitting errors.
The Rangers upped the lead to 20-11 on a kill by Davis, but the Hawks battled back with an 8-1 run which trimmed the UW-Parkside lead to 21-19. Following a Ranger timeout, Turek recorded back-to-back kills and Roembke added another kill to up the lead to 24-20. Roembke finished off the set with a kill off an assist by Adams to get the Rangers back in the match.
The comeback continued in the fourth set as the Rangers jumped out to an early 10-6 lead. Two kills from
Lyndsie Anders and two Quincy attack errors stretched the lead to 19-14, and the Rangers closed out the set on a service ace by Roembke and kills from Davis and Turek.
The fifth set was a tense, back-and-forth affair that neither team led by more than two points. Wisconsin-Parkside held a 10-8 lead following a service ace by Turek and a kill by Anders but Quincy responded with a 4-1 run to take a 12-11 lead.
Adams tied the set at 12-12 with a kill and Davis put the Rangers up 13-12 with a kill, but Kayla Hamilton answered for the Hawks to square the set at 13-13. The Rangers appeared poised to complete the comeback when they took a 14-13 lead on a Quincy service error, but Lindemulder kept the Hawks alive with a kill to knot the score at 14-14.
A Wisconsin-Parkside attack error gave Quincy its first match point, but Davis responded with back-to-back kills giving the Rangers a 16-15 lead. Raebel was able to fend off the Rangers second match point when she recorded a kill to tie the score at 16-16.
Quincy then secured the match on a Ranger attack error and a kill by Raebel for an 18-16 victory.
Wisconsin-Parkside returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 5) when it hosts Truman State at 3 p.m. in DeSimone Gymnasium.
