Brown Sparks Rangers Rally; UWP Beats Michigan Tech

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- Senior Alexander Brown scored all 16 of his points in the second half and Wisconsin-Parkside overcame a 12-point second half deficit to defeat Michigan Tech 73-66 on Sunday on the second day of competition in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge at Neil Carey Arena.

Wisconsin-Parkside, which notched its first win of the season, trailed the Huskies 38-28 at the intermission before roaring back in the second period. Led by Brown, who was 5-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the three-point line in the second half, the Rangers shot 51.9 percent from the floor while limiting Michigan Tech to 25.7 percent shooting. The Rangers made 8-of-14 three-point attempts in the second half led by Brown.

Wisconsin-Parkside, which improved to 1-1 overall on the season, was led in scoring by junior Kendale McCullum who had 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor. He also added six assists, four rebounds and two steals. Brown also tied for the team lead with seven rebounds and added three assists.

Jake Verhagen added eight points and seven rebounds for Wisconsin-Parkside, while Joe Borcia came off the bench to score eight points and grab two rebounds.

Michigan Tech was led by Bryan Heath who finished with a game-high 28 points, while Jordan Chartier had 12 points for the Huskies.

Wisconsin-Parkside jumped out to an early lead only to see the Huskies rally. McCullum jump started an 11-2 run with a three-pointer as the Rangers held an 18-9 lead with 10:21 to play in the first half.

Michigan Tech, which dropped to 1-1 on the season, responded with a 16-0 run that gave the Huskies a 25-18 lead with 5:56 to play in the opening stanza.

Two free throws and a layup by Borcia cut the lead to 25-22, but a three-pointer by Heath pushed the lead to 33-24 with 2:40 to play in the first.

Adam Bonk answered with a three-pointer for the Rangers, but Heath hit a jumper and a three-pointer giving Michigan Tech a a 38-28 lead at the break.

After A.J. Grazulis gave Michigan Tech a 40-28 lead with 19:34 to play in the game, the Rangers turned to their long-distance shooting to turn the game around.

Wisconsin-Parkside exploded for six consecutive three-point baskets, including two in a row  by Brown, to take a 46-40 lead with 14:55 to play in the contest.

A three-point play by McCullum increased the Rangers lead to 49-40 at the 14:29 mark of the second period.

A three-pointer by Tanner Uren helped Michigan Tech climb to within 51-47, but Wisconsin-Parkside responded with a 9-4 run to extend the lead to 60-51 with 7:57 left in the game.

Wisconsin-Parkside held an 11-point lead on two occasions in the second half. The first when McCullum converted a pair of free throws with 7:01 to play and the second when Brown drained a three-pointer for a 65-54 lead with 5:32 left in the game.

Michigan Tech fought back into the game on three-pointers by Heath and Tommy Lucca that trimmed the lead to 67-64 with 2:08 left to play.

Flanigan hit a pair of free throws to increase the lead to 69-64 before Lucca drained a pair for the Huskies cutting the lead to 69-66 with 1:03 to play.

Brown and Verhagen sealed the victory for Wisconsin-Parkside as they each made two free throws with under 30 seconds to play in the game.

The Rangers return to action on Thursday (Nov. 17) when they make their home debut against Northwood at 7 p.m. in DeSimone Gymnasium.
